So why do you allow piss to upset you, Bonj? You tell us it's a matter of choice!

Well, I don't know. Piss on me, then. I'll take bets on how long it will take me to have you arrested.

You prove one of my claims, anyway: those who deny climate change are the same sort of knobheads who deny that smoking is harmful.

I don't deny it's possibly slightly harmful to the smoker themself, what I deny is that it's harmful to other people who aren't the ones doing the smoking.

    Bonj

I repeat the suggestion that I made to you a while ago.

Go and have a look around your local hospital. You may find the ENT department particularly interesting. You might want to look at it in your normal way -peering through squinted eyes with your fingers in your ears.

I bet airport staff are bracing themselves for some angry stressed passengers.

The <s>cancer wards</s>smoking areas in Gatwick are being removed as I type this. Magic!

So what does that prove, that those people MUST have acquired those conditions through passive smoking?

As usual, people have assumed that science deals in absolutes: ie x definitely and without any doubt causes y. That's how politicians and journalists deal in "facts".

Science doesn't do that, it deals in "correlations", "maybe's", "possibly's" and "likely's".

It is extremely likely that there is a causative relationship between cigarette smoke (active or passive) and serious lung diseases.

In Scotland, we have had a ban for well over a year and pubs are far more pleasant places for everyone. Even smokers are acting in the spirit of the law and playing the game.

As for a (before the ban) non-smoking pub? hahahahahahahahahaha!

Really? I'm flabbermegasted! I NEVER came across one anywhere in Scotland. Or anywhere else.

You MAY have been more progressive, but now ALL of our pubs are non-smoking![:D]

(Don't let's turn this into another Scotland vs England thread!)

Ha ha, I thought that was poking the nest a bit! Sorry Papercorn.

My local has been "no smoking" since January 07 (so not that long), and there's a couple that I've known about for a couple of years that actively advertise as "no smoking", they've had specially made oak signs (the standard no-smoking ones) put up outside the premises!

Seems like an underexploited market to me, if it had been exploited then I guess the smoking ban (in pubs/restaurants anyway) may not have been necessary. I would add that I fully support the other public places ban libraries, stations etc.

There were non-smoking pubs but not very many of them. When I lived in Sheffield there were two out of countless pubs. One was in an extremely undesirable area, the other a very pleasant country pub a fair way from civilisation. This meant that effectively for most people on the average trip out there were no non-smoking pubs to choose from.

I noticed that Sheffield Station is now a non-smoking station. Anyone know when stations started putting the signs up?

Two pubs in my area went non-smoking a few months ago (cleadon village)...which I believe became the first non-smoking village in England....very civilised[^]
All the chuffers migrated en-mass to the nearest pub over the border in Shields...which upset the non-smokers, who emigrated over into cleadon...polarisation of smokers and non-smokers complete[:)]

Which end of Cleadon? Golf course? Dog track? Whitburn?

The pub I use in deepest Kent has been NS for about 8 weeks now. Total success. A lot of trade from far off. One or two of the nicotene addict initially got the ache, but for the meentime they use the garden.

I only ever came across 'non-smoking' pubs abroad - mainly by dint of there being far fewer smokers in some countries!

I think the Wetherspoons(spg?) chain was no smoking before the general ban in Scotland.

Wetherspoons is a nest of evil. They probably put weedkiller in your food. Allegedly.

Who me? Well we don't actually live in Cleadon (too poor- but my sister does) but just over the border in shields, near the golf course
The pubs are the Cottage and the Toby (formerly the Brittania- yes just as cheesy[xx(])

Surely England is abroad for you?

Have to say that the smoking ban has been absolutely fantastic here.. England are soon to find out what they have been missing.
