Today's discussion about the news

In other news it appears that big corporations are regressing to even more racial based non hiring, money grabbing, profit driven shits of the n'th degree than they ever were.
Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

Insurance at heart actually is a kind of socialism, in that everyone contributes to a funding pool to help out those in need. The problems come when the gatekeepers to those funds look on the model as one for profiteering. It's one reason I've insured with NFU Mutual for the past 40 years, as that seems a less likely model to be exploited at the expense of policy holders.

The very same happens here after floods.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

They are to an extent always reflecting US society.

David Allen Green suggesting that the likes of Zuck, Musk & Bezos sucking up to Trump actually illustrates their weakness in many ways: the power of governments to regulate big tech (USB-C in EU, Twitter in Brazil) shows how reliant they are on governments allowing them to do what they want to do.
In that respect, it does seem rather bold of both Musk and Zuckerberg to be riling the EU at this juncture.

I guess it's somewhat interesting that DEI programs were often presented as something that just made good business sense, rather than being a fluff program for HR to feel good about themselves...

In my company they were presented as good business sense because the US market wanted proof that we had them.
I think it has become a self-perpetuating and well marketed sub-industry that has probably got a bit out of proportion. But then in the US, it will probably swing back too far the other way for the next few years, towards toxic out grouping.

Reform copying the Republicans by falling out with each other.

You wonder what state Reform will be in by the next election

Apologies, but I'm just trolling

Using private fire fighters, how very non-socialist. I would say burn them but that might not be totally appropriate.
And 'fury' - it does seem that Metro journos are reading this forum 🙂

I'm disappointed by the impact of my trolling. All those pages about whether private firefighters exist and when it is front page news (OK, it's the metro), hardly any comment!

I think that some people on here would rather they didn't, so when it came up in a newspaper they retreated into their metropolitan liberal bubble.

In an area of wealthy residents in the US there is probably a private version of every public service, don't want to use those nasty socialist public ones.

Certainly in this case they would be using both

An interesting article on the century-long mismanagement of the LA fire risk.

Great to see Israel are getting some last minute killing in while they still can.

As well as not ratifying the proposed treaty, because... something, something, something.
It seems that whatever they do, they are in effect unaccountable to anyone. Lots of tutting and shaking of heads from nearly everyone, followed by another arms deal.

An interesting piece... seems that 'private firefighters' aren't really about turning up with what the state already provides...

Do they exist then?

I think it was always acknowledged they existed, just not in the form where some rich guy can call them up to specifically stop his house burning down. Airports for example have private firefighters and no doubt many industrial complexes (I know Hinkley Point C has a private firefighters station and is just a construction site).

"Take Wildfire Defense Companies. When there's a wildfire endangering homes insured by comp, crews from the company show up loaded with their own water supplies.
But David Torgerson, the executive chairman of Wildfire Defense, says most of what they provide is labor to try to prevent fires from engulfing a home in the first place — largely tasks that don't require water.
"We clean, we sweep, we clear gutters, we take away the places where the embers can ignite on the property or take away the access that the embers have to get in the buildings," he says.
For example, burning embers can get into the dryer vent. So Wildfire Defense crews will tape the vent shut.
They'll also return after the fire passes to make sure there isn't a bush or fence that's burning that could ignite the house."
Not exactly what people are imagining then. And bloody expensive for what are essentially cleaners.

Red Adair was a private firefighter.

My point was more about people's perception v service actually provided.
People think they'll get Red Adair, chances are they'll get a bunch of Mexicans with a team leader. If there are any left after next week.

Odd comment

Why odd? A lot of Mexicans have been helping in the LA fires, but Trump is threatening to deport all non-USAnians.

Would that include the Muskrat?

I find it remarkable that despite modern technology, occupation and widespread "interrogation" (aka torture) Israel has been unable to find the hostages, and then when agreed, they just pop up somewhere.
In other news Israel has admitted to using ambulances as assault vehicles and has just released a 15 year old from prison. Even after the prisoner swaps there will still be thousands detained without charge (there are other names for this).

I do find it odd that the media continue to call one side 'hostages' and the other 'prisoners' when both seem to have been captured by one going into the other's territory.
