evian, or perhaps a fizzy one for extra co2 fire snuffing power

Is this even news? Probably one for the social media miscellany thread (sorry, doing Brian out of a job).
Mind you, cant see an issue with people not burdening the state by going private - a bit like health, education etc.

Yep, good point. That's what's nuts about Labours plans to tax private education, parents are doing the state a favour.

Yep - taxing people who are doing the state a favour (and at the same time, funding the state service that they don't use).

Are all private schools NPOs? Because of they do make profits, the tax break is effectively going into someone's pocket.
By extension, the case to apply VAT to those with charitable seems weak.

Not in the few hours he has before his house catches fire.

I'm not sure that every person in a city of 4 million having their own private firefighting arrangement is the most efficient way of doing things. Especially if they wait until the middle of an inferno to try and arrange it over social media.

Freedom of speech DOES include the right to shout "fire" in a crowded building.

The wild fires are, I think newsworthy, given it's the middle of winter even in LA. The stupidity of 1. waiting until your neighbours are on fire 2. Thinking there would be available some available firefighters when there's a large wildfire, is what caught my eye.
I'm sure everyone knows that the fire service in this country started on a subscription basis. Nowadays a few security firms offer private fire fighting as a service but this is really only a commercial service. If the guy is only a millionaire he probably can't afford it on a domestic basis.

yeah, he's left it way too late
best bet now is tell the israeli death force that hamas are in the surrounding woodland, they might blow it up fast enough to create a fire break

Far too obvious. Tell them there's a hospital hidden in the forest.

Hope remains. There is still the water in the swimming pool.

Maybe not, but that's not the point that I'm making.

It commented a few days ago on here that snow in large parts of the USA didn't seem newsworthy, so on that basis fires in a small part isn't either.

I don't know if they all are, but the stupidity and/or nastiness of punishing people who are doing the state a favour is still relevant.

Probably should be less newsworthy than the earthquake in Tibet, but there we are.
Houses burning in the richest part of the richest country in the world is going to be worth looking at.

Feel free to ignore the thread if you prefer.

I was replying to you because you were trying to pick argument on a minor point. Maybe it's not the thread I should be ignoring? 😉

"Fires in a small part" is an interesting characterisation of this https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c5y81zyp1ext

Re the fires, I'm waiting on a "pray for them" plea.
Surely it is God's will? If you believe in that stuff.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Talk to Mr Sterry, it was his attempt at an argument.
But thanks for your contribution anyway,

I know that, just try making them worth arguing about 🙂

It's news by virtue of being published and broadcast by newspapers and news broadcasters. Doesn't seem that much of a stretch that four simultaneous, out of season wildfires around the second largest city in the US was more noteworthy than snow in a place that normally has snow at this time of year.
You invented private fire brigades to try and claim the idiot millionaire was doing everyone a favour.

I think this does count as news more than a bit of snow.

I think we would be flabbergasted if it was not world newsworthy that London was on fire.
