Should Mark Cavendish swallow his pride and retire?

Philipsen had to almost pedal backwards to get caught there.
Froome should be there or thereabouts next year surely.

I thought Cavendish attacking and passing Pogacar 4km from the top of the hors category climb was a bit much.

The BBC news report was amusing.
Hope he finds a new role soon.

My sample of 4 casual (tdf only) followers indicates they were all impressed that he went out on a high

Wow, wonder what they'll make of Froomey winning next year?

They'll have to work extra hard for that - he got dropped this year, finished 21 seconds down. Which is fitting I suppose.
Nibali finished with the main group lol.

Yeah, but Froome's role in the plot was to be in the break on the final lap (along with Nibali). Once he got caught he just sat up. Two years ago, when Vingegaard had to win, his role was also to be in the break with JV and Niibali, but of course this time it had to stay away, so he came second.

If you fancy doing a hard Cavendish quiz, he was a specialist subject on Mastermind this evening. The contestant got 8. I got 7 but had the advantage of being able to pause the TV for a few seconds thinking time, and two were educated guesses (which he got wrong).
I only got four when it was the Vuelta. I tempted to apply with Sky cycling as my specialist subject - alternate Christopher Nolan films or the Back to the Future trilogy.

I got three, but there were two more that I should have got but couldn't bring to mind.
It's when celebrity mastermind does a subject you know something about that you realise how much easier that is.

I have not watched it yet but now looking forward to it. At last a subject about which I might know some answers. It's such a dour programme though.

You're lucky too, I think it's the very first round of questions.

I got two although one of those the contestant got wrong. I didn't pause it so I might have a got a couple of others with a moment to think.

Looks like the BBC have realised their mistake and issued a 'you can't come back now' lifetime achievement award.
Or maybe it was the plan all along.

On what basis do you say this? I think he’s probably better known than he was in 2011. In 2011 he won from a field of 10 or 12, with just about half the total votes.
That said, it wasnt the most inspirational of fields aside from Darren Clarke. But neither is this year’s.

I don't see why he would beat people who are currently the best in the world at their sport in the regular vote. He achieved an impressive statistical footnote this year, with one stage win.
Lifetime achievement award is the right call.
This year looks like a pretty stacked spoty field to me.

Getting past the winner and the BBC, does anyone care?

I agree to an extent although the token footballer feels out of place and whilst I'm a huge admirer of Sarah Storey I find her inclusion this time rather than in previous years slightly perplexing (she's won more at previous Olympics and beat the all-time paralympic medal haul in 2021). Likewise it hasn't really been a prolific year for Cav and the lifetime achievement feels a much more relevant award as it would for Storey too.

If the 16 year old kebab eating darts kid (he's 17 now...) doesn't win it's a travesty.

There's only really Hodgkinson, Yee and possibly Storey who are currently the best in their sport. Littler isn't even the best Luke.

Seems odd that Pidcock isn't included, given he was the only individual GB athlete to defend their Olympic title in Paris. And he forced a Frenchie to crash into a tree whilst doing so, having recovered from "out with the washing" after a puncture.
But given there's only 6 on the list and there has to be para representation and a sensible m/f split, Yee probably got the nod for the only "male Olympic champion" spot on the short list.

Interview with Cavendish in the Guardian. Confirms he's looking at management. Also can't resist a dig at other team managers...

Great interview, thanks for posting.
