I thought Cavendish attacking and passing Pogacar 4km from the top of the hors category climb was a bit much.

Yeah, but Froome's role in the plot was to be in the break on the final lap (along with Nibali). Once he got caught he just sat up. Two years ago, when Vingegaard had to win, his role was also to be in the break with JV and Niibali, but of course this time it had to stay away, so he came second.
