About to go on the turbo, and will be starting this series that I never noticed on iplayer called DNA, first series shown here in 2020, 2nd series 2023 - had great reviews, and is Dutch, so potentially MvdP has watched it as well, possibly DvB, and then by association and proximity, potentially even the lovely and highly talented PFP 😍

"Danish detective Rolf Larsen has his life brutally upended when his daughter goes missing. Five years on, a new lead emerges, and the lines between personal and professional blur."

No ads as it's iplayer, and only 40-45 minutes each, so will get through a couple on my 90 minute threshold session coming up :-)

    Series 1 is 8 episodes, series 2 is 6.

  • Enjoying Fallout, adaptation of a video game, daft, cartoon style violence and good fun to watch. Not to everybody's taste I suspect.

    I enjoyed Ludwig on BBC.

Not sure why I watched Industry.

  • Ludwig was fun but the premise and its nuances were more entertaining than the individual plot lines. The 2nd series will need to change shape to survive.

  • Really enjoyed the 2nd season of the Diplomat: well developed characters, vaguely believable plot lines with sharp wit and dialogue coupled together with a brilliant twist at the end. It just felt measured and grown up. Some of the locations were stunning too.

Wish we'd rewatched the final episode of season 1 as the timeline between the 2 seasons is seamless and I spent much of episode 1 trying to remember who's who.

  • Just watching the 1st series of Wolf Hall before we watch the new series, forgot how excellent it was!

Ludwig was excellent imho, felt like the two leads were not pushed outside of their comfort zones if that makes sense, pretty much playing their 'stock' personas if that makes, though that's not a criticism at all.

I've one more to watch in the series, so not sure how it ends, or if any conclusions are reached.

Good cast on the whole I thought.

This is excellent by the way, really good, lead actor is superb imho.

A ~75 year old Charlotte Rampling also plays a not too minor part in it as well.

I'm 4 episodes through the 2nd series, 2 to go, no idea if a 3rd is planned, I think potentially not.

Day of the Jackal on Sky Atlantic is pretty good. Eddie Redmayne is the slightly left field choice for the Jackal, but it works well. A modern take on the original story rather than retelling the old one.

    Enjoying it a lot.

I never thought of Edward Fox as a typical assassin so Eddie Redmayne maybe isn't as left field as it would first appear.

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Yep, don't usually bother with TV series but this one is a cut above. There's a bit of padding to make it fill 10 episodes but that's about it on the downside.

Ditto. Casting Redmayne as the Jackal was probably deliberately left field and maybe a nod to the original.

Probably, he’s nailed the cold, effeminate fop character but personally I think the role would be better suited to someone slightly more rugged. But the series is decent despite Redmayne.

I'm a little behind the curve but caught up with Squid Games this week. Ep 1 was a slow burner and thought I was really missing something, but then the story got going properly and I enjoyed it. Was so much better with original voices and subtitles than the weird US dubbing too.

I guess they wanted some similarity to the original Jackal.

  • Just watched a couple of episodes, it is pretty good!

  • I have now watched a couple of episodes of the Jackal and I am quite enjoying it, despite the ludicrous coincidences and the so called “expert” talking nonsense and drawing conclusions out of thin air.

Just made a start on The Sopranos. Makes a nice change from Cheers. I think it'll be somewhat more rewarding, and as the episodes are twice as long, I'll get a lot more trumpet practice done.

Don't know if you have Prime but I see The Shield has popped up there. I remember it as being excellent. Don't know if it has aged well though.

A slight detour. I got pissed off with C4 when they ceased streaming Cheers around this time last year. How have you been watching it? I was a couple of series from completion.

DVD for Cheers (and anything else}. I have an occasional look for cheap box sets specifically for trumpet practice. The Sops should keep me going for about six months, and I've got Frasier lined up after that. I think I tried The Shield thinks yonks ago but never got into it. I need to rewatch The Wire at some stage.

I was watching The Shield on Prime a year or so back then they started asking for payment to watch more episodes. Is it free again?

    Seems to be.

It is one of those series that slowly escalates. Picture the cops like the proverbial frog in a pot.

Very much enjoying Black Doves on Netflix - stella cast, Whishaw is such a brilliant actor, and I have a lot of time for the Knightley.

The first program in a long time, where there are actually some imaginative and interesting car choices as well.

  • Very much agree with you there, Daniel although I thought the final episode was a bit drawn out with an overly detailed explainer for those that hadn't been paying attention at the back plus a tying up of all the loose ends that probably means no series 2.

    I was entertained.

I'm only 3 episodes in, but loving it so far, but violent for my partner, but she is managing........

Loving the 635Csi, the Jag or Daimler the boss has, although the wheels are a bit odd, and yes the A plate XR3i is a very nice touch.

My only annoyance so far is the 'engine' noise of the Beemer when they are driving, to my mind it sounds nothing like it.

Twould be a shame if there was no series 2, fingers crossed.

EDIT: Just googled, and it appears that 2 days ago a second season has been confirmed!

    Yes. Enjoying Black Doves

Kinda wishing the 3 characters in Black Doves were hunting the Jackal

  • If you don't mind a few subtitles, State of Happiness about the Norwegian oil boom is a great watch (BBC4). Does a good job of weaving fictional characters into historical events.

The latest series has a real allegorical moment where they have to decide if the efficiencies allowed by automation are to benefit the few or to be fed into the state via a sovereign wealth fund. You're left thinking: AI, oh hang on, oh crap.

Love subtitles, the vast majority of what I watch (on and off the turbo) is foreign productions, C4 Walter Presents, plus whatever BBC might have. State of happiness sounds worth a watch, thanks for the tip.
