Should Chris Froome swallow his pride and retire?

Keep going on about it, as if being a PRO cyclist was the same as being a fire fighter or a nurse… it’s not the same thing and the guy does not need the job. Being unable to perform in performance sport is a bit like being a neuro surgeon with no hands…
If he likes being in that world, surely there is another role for him, like probably there is another role in a hospital for said neuro surgeon.

In your analogy the employer would get rid of him. Whilst it feels he's either deluding himself that he can retun to some kind of form or is simply exploiting the contract his employer / sponsors at IPT took a gamble or felt he was worth the money they are spending. Only they will know if that gamble has been worthwhile, winning races is really only a means to an end for sponsors - the actual end is achieving publicity and Froome still does that far more than a journeyman pro even if the journeyman is performing slightly better. Who would get them more publicity Chris Froome or Mark Donovan (chosen as he is currently the highest ranked British rider not on a World Tour teamin 293rd vs 2475th)?

The answer is I don’t know. He has been seen on TV once during the ADH stage…. other than that he doesn’t attract crowds anymore…

That's not fair, him being dropped early on the final climb is usually shown on TV.

Simple question. Would we be talking about IPT if Froome wasn't there?
No. Job done.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.2 -

This thread has generated more interest though. 😉

We might be talking about them winning Fleche Wallone.

I doubt he’ll find anyone to take him on when his contract comes up for renewal. When IPT gave him his current contract he was obviously worth the gamble. Now he has years of absolutely no results, is approaching 40 and his wife’s behaviour is likely to make him too much of a PR liability for anyone who may have taken a chance on having a multiple GT winning rider on the books. I assume he knows all that himself even if he wants to carry on so why not milk his current deal?

because that might prevent him from getting other roles in the future in my opinion.

What roles? He has business interests outside cycling. I don’t think he is still doing it for purely financial reasons and can’t see him moving into a team role.

So after the Criterium du Dauphine what are Froome's chances of going to the Tour?

Probably the same as before it tbh.
Here in Denmarkland we're keen to see Fuglsang get a last ride in the Tour

I only mention it because he was apparently (according to stories in the press) talking a lot about the Dauphine and a return to the Tour.

Maybe he needs the money to help Wiggo out

Does this mean I get my stake money back from the bookies for that each way bet on him winning?

Surely he realises that now it's time to retire?

IPT are down for the Vuelta this year, so that would give him a chance to bow out with some dignity at a race he has plenty of history with.

I'll admire him more if he carries on taking the cash next year.

Current contract ends next year? If so, easy money for another ~18 months!😆

I prefer to think of him like one of those old founding Directors of a large company that keeps a seat on the Board and a large salary for the rest of their days without ever really doing anything.

Froome looking forwards to riding as a domestique in '25.
Thinks he'll be up for it since he used to be his bag pre 2011.

Last race of the current season for Froome this week at the Gree-Tour of Guangxi
He recently said that his prospects of ever winning again were slim. In four years with IPT he's earned 66 UCI points. That's cost IPT 300,000 per point.
Froome told journalists "“I don’t look at results anymore, no. At the moment I’m mainly trying to do what I can in sports. Realistically, I can’t compete for wins anymore,”
Froome hopes for a return to the Tour in 2025.

Doesn't even seem like he has particular value as a domestique if he gets dropped at the first climb. Shame really. I would have wanted a nicer end to his career for him.

£5m a year for 5 years doesn't sound like too bad an end to his career

He was in the break at the Tour of Guangxi today, but was dropped from it on a climb about 35 kms from the finish.
