Quite a few people write their opinions in Cake Stop. Just sayin'...

Not seen any advocating open borders. Not even me.

So what limits on immigration do you think there should be?

Anyone as long as they are not from Teeside.😉

You first.

I think we should say it 100,000 but then let multiples of that in whilst having a rule that you can pay them less than the going rate.

Dunno. Don't have a problem with a job offer at some form of minimum salary, or other means of supporting oneself, or a place in full time education, but I think it's a question of criteria rather than setting arbitrary numbers. Let the employment market and the student market determine the numbers. Asylum is a completely separate category and just a question of meeting our obligations.

Fair enough. I think we also need to have limits based on net immigration numbers or by reference to the overall population level, but I know that probably belongs in the unpopular opinions thread.

So it seems the headlines about France might have been premature.

Why are they watching the result on a 27" TV in an unfinished sports bar?

A hung parliament may be the best outcome for France given the other choices of two extremes of the political spectrum. However it looks like this is going to be deadlock and they may have to go through it all again to break it.

Russia bombing a children's hospital in Kiev as a reminder that they're fucking scum and need to be eradicated from Ukraine, and the entire senior leadership that props up Putin,

You seem much more chilled about it when it is Israel doing the hospital bombing.

Ukraine haven't used human shields for a decade long tactics, so yeah, there is a difference :).
You can read a tonne about insurgency tactics and using human shields to turn public opinion against your enemies if you are so interested.
Insurgents who use human shield are as complicit in the civilian deaths as their enemies. The sooner people work that out, the sooner we can have a constructive conversation about the tactics used in the war and how appropriate they were (hint, leadership of both sides are wanted for war crimes - go figure).
0 -
A core part of war crimes is that they can't be used to justify more war crimes.

There has been a lot of research and writing on the topic of human shields used in asymmetric warfare, and there have long been suggestions to change the law on war crimes to make those using civilians are human shields much more legally responsible for their deaths when prosecuting war crimes, in some attempt to reduce the effectiveness of the tactic.
The whole point of the tactic is to warp the idea of what is proportional and what isn't to the point of ineffectiveness, and attack a core weakness of a democratic military that has in its doctrine an inbuilt need to avoid civilian casualties.
Hamas are keener on civilians deaths than the Israelis (or, perhaps more accurately, civilian death of Palestinians is a core tactic and even strategy to erode western support for Israel, (as the IDF behaviour makes it clear they don't give much of a shit anyway).
Let's face it, the tactic has been remarkably successful for hamas.

And and and, he didn't seem to mind the Dutch fans chucking drinks at the French players either !!!
They better not do that whilst they're playing against the inventors of football.

Use of human shields in one place does not mean war crimes elsewhere can be justified. Israel managed to shoot three of its own citizens who were shirtless and waving white flags - that standard of engagement, which has been repeated countless times, should be condemned.

no-one is arguing that BB, but if you don't understand how human shield's work, it's not really worthwhile having a discussion about it.
Suffice to say, even you can understand the contextual difference between Russia Ukraine and Israel Hamas.

I understand it is an area that causes considerable cognitive dissonance.

I suppose it's not surprising that the EU is still worth blaming for 'stuff' in the Telegraph's eyes. In this case, the 'migrants' in question in the headline are the children of people already in the UK. How dare the EU want to reunite them with their parents, eh?

In the land of exceptionalism (😂) it is always someone else's fault.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0
