The issue I have with graphs is that they are supposed to summarise things concisely in graphic form so if they seem to be missing information or to have something like a questionable scale they don’t fulfil that purpose. That then gets you wondering if there is a reason for those discrepancies and questioning more widely what they are supposedly showing. It’s a bit like taking a car covered it bumps and dirt for an MOT, the bumps and dirt aren’t reasons for failing but can get the testers looking a bit harder for faults.

What's the point here, that first doesn't believe that you can be worse of earning more in Germany, or that the conditions for that to actually be the case are so specific that the chart is pointless? Or is it that crowbarring it into a point about France is silly

If you post an iffy chart based on very specific German data to make a point about France, I'd naturally wonder if you have any basis for the more general claim.

For me, initially it was trying to understand what the graph was showing. No disputing whether it was right or wrong just trying to understand it (and I don’t think I was the only one). It’s something that I often struggle with when there’s a Twitter link with a picture and headline as I don’t use Twitter so can’t always see the actual detail.

I'm sure I remember there being some sentences before and after the chart. I sort of thought people might read them, but clearly my mistake. It's a little tricky to edit someone else's tweet, though.

Err... no. I was trying to find some reasonably reliable data that supported the points about why France is particularly in a hole. They didn't seem that controversial but you seemed to doubt them.

That's not the argument that was made. To summarise:
- "...the feedback loop of incentives to work to create wealth where a portion pays for a welfare state (a good thing) doesn't work anymore..."
(German example that everyone has fixated on)
- France is in a worse position than other countries because public spending is already very high as a % of GDP and it has higher national debt and already has a higher tax burden.
- attempts to reduce public spending met with violent protests and little scope to increase receipts or borrow more, but public have still voted for parties promising to spend more.
