Donald Trump

The situation is laughable.

I don't see it as a reason to vote for Trump, far from it, the people behind him are dangerous - but that debate didn't change my mind.

I guess in comparison with Biden then Trump is smart, but it's a very low bar.
America has a huge problem. One candidate has mental issues and the other is a proven self serving narcissistic liar. The future may well be orange but it's not bright.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.1 -
One candidate has mental issues?! One?!
0 -
Yep, but it's the same one as is the narcissistic liar. The other is succumbing to old age.

Okay, one has age related cognitive mental issues which should preclude them from leadership.
The other has a whole ream of other mental issues which should preclude them from leadership.

This, I don’t believe Biden has mental issues as such, and could probably excellently take on the role of adviser. He has lost the ability to communicate effectively however, and that is what you need for the presidential role.
Trump is a liar, and is dangerous.

Not everyone works an 80 hour week in their 80s though, or tries to run a country. That's the issue, not the medical miracle we are witnessing.

Yeah it's ludicrous.
I'd say something about American boomers etc but I can't be bothered this afternoon.
0 -
Isn’t he too old to be a boomer?
0 -
Exactly. Its normal.
0 -
Not remotely normal to still be in a job, let alone arguably the most important job in the world.
0 -
Didn’t say it was. I was just saying I don’t think he has mental problems, just getting old.
Obviously not up to the job anymore.

It's wild that when they got in and had control of the senate they didn't do anything mad like nominate a bunch more supreme court judges.
Other than that, whatever goes on in the White House seems to be working, but surely nobody can now picture him still being president in 2028.

Which is a bigger problem with the vice president being unpopular .

Maybe the Democrats should invite Taylor Swift to be their lead candidate?

No vacancies on the SC till someone dies or resigns though, without expanding it, which might be controversial (though probably justified given the extraordinary power they have to upend government functions).

this is what trump's hard-right backers were after...

I have always been of the opinion that Trump was a one term President. I fully expected him to run again and win the Rep nomination, in spite of Jan 6th. I still think when it comes down to it that Biden wins but last night will have moved the dial and it is now a major risk.
It won't happen, but the Dems need to convince him to stand aside and let Newsom run.

Yup, one of the building blocks of the new Christian Republic they dream of. It's properly scary unless you're a rich white man. Project 2025 is looking somewhat more likely today. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_2025

Exactly this, nothing says it has to be 9. It hasn't always been 9.
If the other lot don't accept the norms, you have to stretch the rules as well or you lose for a generation. The court is now a political organisation with a republican bias for years. If trump gets back in, it will be for decades.

It's over stuff like this I realise I've got no idea how the US system really works, and how it's not exploded into a thousand pieces before now. We currently seem to have a system where one half still thinks they need to respect all the norms, and the other party that is vigorously seeing how many of those norms they can not only ignore but overturn.
With what Project 2025 is hoping to do, I'm amazed that a any woman could vote Republican. It's horrific where it's heading, enabled by a completely politicised judiciary, and, if Republicans get their way, a completely politicised machinery of state. I'm just gobsmacked at the power the SC has, in effect, taken on itself, not least in upending settled precedent without elected politicians having any ability to put a check on massive changes in the effect of laws.

So he's immune for official acts, and SCOTUS has deferred to the lower courts to decide what that means. Since many of those justices are even more partisan, the likelihood is that the caselaw will develop to protect essentially any action of a US president.
That country's democracy is in for a rough ride now. If he gets in, he will "officially" do what he wants against his opponents.
I wish Biden had had enough guts to have rebalance SCOTUS.

So what is Joe Biden allowed to do now according to this ruling?
0 -
If democrats are being honest about what kind of risk Trump poses, they need to get a bit ruthless and get rid of Biden. At this point it looks like they're afraid of hurting the man's feelings. Idiots.

Presumably he could shoot Trump live on TV in the next debate. That would be worth tuning in to watch.
1 -
As an official act, obviously.
