I didn't think they were even guaranteed to go through?

And in fairness to the format, although it is a bit school sports day, there are very few completely dead rubbers in game three.
The flip side is that the qualification for the preceding two years is dull as dishwater, because you have to be Wales or not actually under UEFA to manage not to make it.

It gives an advantage to teams in later groups as they know what they need to do to qualify.
Hungary may get through, but England need to beat Slovenia. So they'll be training today, not knowing if they're through. Stupid.

I think Croatia only go through if England win by 4. (scroll to end - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/european-championship/schedule#B)

Whoever put this together (no idea who casual mind is) can't follow basic bracket formats.
If we top the group we play a 3rd placed team from one of group D/E/F.
We would then play a qtr final against Switzerland or Italy.
The top placed teams in groups D & E are on our side of the draw, which would mean we could play France/Netherlands/Belgium amongst a host of other permutations.
No idea why the twitter poster thinks Italy and France are on the other side of the draw, they are wrong.

The Grauniad is never wrong.

Have a double check when you get a chance, but I am pretty sure they are incorrect.
I am happy to eat humble pie if it turns out I am wrong though!

Tweet was posted about five minutes before the end of last night's game.
Italy definitely moved to the bottom half, France will too if they do do better than the Netherlands in the last group matches.
It's still undoubtedly better to win the group - if we come second we could get Germany then Spain, then Belgium, Netherlands or France.

That was a tad premature on their part then. So, I am correct in that case?
Too be fair to Croatia, their coach was questioning where on earth the 4th official found 8mins of stoppage time. I would be inclined to agree, there was maybe 3 or 4 max.

Yes, the tweet was correct at the time posted, but not any longer.
On the other hand, I assume that France are similarly hoping that they get into the half of the draw with the less impressive "big" teams like Italy, Belgium and England. Portugal don't really look all that, either.

All the so called "big teams" have looked less than impressive so far, France included.
I would say it is a fairly wide open tournament at the moment, I am not as convinced by Germany as others seem to be. I think it is going to be whoever manages the big game pressure better will win, rather than one strong team marching to the trophy (although if any team does, it looks likely to be Spain at this stage).

France have yet to score a goal!
Spain look head and shoulders above everyone else at the moment

Can't disagree with that.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Spain looked good in the group stages of the world cup too, tbf.
In general, group performance does not reflect knockout performance, I would say.

On the English evidence so far, I bloody hope so!

Don't remember how furious everyone was at the Euros after England's second group match draw against Scotland?
Turgid, lifeless, no chances etc?
Got within a penalty shootout win from winning the whole thing.
It'll all be forgotten if they have another deep run. It won't be if they don't.

Just reading back the thread from 2021. Third game was no better.
Apparently Kane's legs were gone then already.
Then with 20 minutes to go in the Germany game, on comes Grealish for Saka and we're alright.

You're right of course.
I was in conversation last night with a good friend who is a "proper" England fan when it comes to travelling to Euros/World Cups etc. He is as passionate and involved fan of English football as anyone I know. When I suggested that I thought Gordon should perhaps replace TAA, his reply that was we should remember the last few tournaments that Southgate has been in charge of - he has huge loyalty to his players and, despite the knee jerk reactions of a million Facebook managers, journalists and pundits, this loyalty (and, to a certain extent, style) hasn't worked out too bad in the past three tournaments. He has a point.

I do agree that Southgate is loyal to players and that has generally worked out well, in spite of calls on many occasions to drop certain players in the past, most notably Stirling and Maguire. I do think TAA is a different case though, he is not a CM going through a patch of indifferent form, he is a right back being asked to play out of position in a major tournament. I completely understand the logic behind the decision to play him there but it just hasn't worked out as hoped. I do think Southgate will replace him, I wouldn't place any blame on manager or player, they took a gamble and it hasn't paid off.

No Euros related but BBC website says:
"Legendary former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry is one of the names being considered to succeed Rob Page as Wales manager"
Was not expecting that!
Wilier Izoard XP0 -
Me too. Thierry Henry had had an incredibly successful career in football, so why go and spoil it now?

Does he know that because of blanket 20 mph speed limits he can't go va va voom?
3 -
It would probably be part-time, nice hobby for him.
Surprised they just don’t get Giggs back now.

I have a feeling that Wales might not be his top choice in any event, but that probably wouldn't help as I doubt he's a member of the CLSDC (Centre Leftie Shit Drivers Club), a strange cult that believes we can be safe if we don't stick to 20mph in town.

Hasn't he been lacklustre as a manager to date? Doubt he'd get a "big team" so...

Beautiful goal by the Dutch defender.

Let's all hope the Dutch fans behave tonight and show some respect to the Austrian players.
