Euro 2024 thread
Since it's coming around again woop woop.
England have an absolutely outrageous midfield - so much so can they can afford to leave a champions league finalist out of the squad.
Who's gonna win it?

Scotland.

The defence will enable that.
Still not going to be Scotland though. Nae chance.

TBF at least they're in it, which kind of surprised me.

Mercy sakes alive, looks like we've got ourselves a Rodney. I'm offended that the flagger is some wokey shagger who can't take a joke. Away and launder your drape.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Scottish national team is nothing to do with the Scottish National Party.

If it is the Euros, along the likes of Euro crap vision, how many non-European teams are at the finals?! 😁

I think Scotland will be dragged out of Europe against their will.... In the group stage.

I would say that there are probably 5 teams in with a realistic shout. France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and England . . . I guess it would be daft to ignore Belgium.
In any one-off game, I fancy England could beat any of those although, in a one-off game, any of those could beat England too.
I'd say England have as good a chance as anyone and a better chance than most and I'll be behind them all the way (however far that is).
PS, just for the record before the tournament starts, I am already prepared for the onslaught of piss taking from supporters of other home nations if and when England get beaten and knocked out even though they have gone further than any of those nations. It will not bother me.

IMO quarters are expected. Semis are par, finals a good tournament and winning exceptional.

England are the bookies favourite, have never seen that before.

Bookies odds are affected by bets placed. What are England's odds in France?

Yes patriotic betting always played a part, most tournaments between 2000 and 2012 iirc they went off at around 7-1 on the weight of fan belief, after that reality finally set in and it doubled. At least you could now argue those odds can have at least some justification.

The Euros always seem to throw up a surprise team and more often than not, the favourites don't tend to win. Having said that, I can't look beyond France and England. On paper probably the most complete squads are Portugal and Spain, but I think over the last 2 or 3 years they have achieved less than the sum of their parts.
England have the most gifted attacking options, even more so than France, but France are proven winners. I think the key is how fresh Bellingham is, I think if he can carry his form and leadership from Real Madrid into the tournament then England win it. Winning teams in major tournaments generally have that one x factor player that gets them over the line.

England going forward isn't the problem, that's the defence.

It is but I don't think the defensive issues are as bad as is being made out. I am not in the get rid of Maguire camp, he is always solid for England. His downfall in the PL is his lack of pace but that does not get exposed in international football as the pace of the games is nowhere near PL level. We are in trouble if he or Stones cannot play, cover is very thin at CB. Walker is still playing near the top of his game, the obvious weakness is LB, with only an unfit Shaw to play.
Still not sure what the deal is with Ben White? He has obviously fallen out with some of the coaching staff but you would have thought a chance to play for England in this team would be incentive enough to patch things up.

Foden is quite possibly they key to a successful tournament for me, no pressure but I'm expecting nothing but good things from him. I thought when I first saw him a couple of years ago he is the first English player I could remember being totally comfortable with the ball. Even with a couple of opposing players in close proximity he is always happy to receive it and almost always looks after it with ease.
It is something England has always lacked, the ability as a team to keep it and manage the game, most noticeably that match against France where Zidane scored two late goals to nick the win after we spent much of it 1-0 up. Can still remember my dad shouting 'Just keep the bloody ball!' every time we had it only for it to be returned to the opposition within 3 passes.

Yes, Foden is the certainly the most gifted player we have and I think he will take his City form into the Euros. I think you also need that player who will drag you through tight games, a Keane or Gerrard type and that is Bellingham for me. The good thing is both would walk into any National team in the world and they are ours!
I remember that game, Euro 2004 group game. 18 year old Rooney absolutely terrified France. I am certain had he not broken his foot against Portugal we would have won that tournament.

I wouldn't disagree. The good thing is we get to see them both in the same team and compare!

I don't watch any La Liga so wouldn't want to offer an opinion. Also does Bellingham play in the same position for club and country...is he pushed further forward for RM?

Foden strikes me as a player who shines in City's system, but who underwhealms elsewhere. Hope not, but fear so.

He plays as a number 8 for England, so a box to box midfielder. Ancelotti plays him more as a 10, and tells him to get in the box more often, hence the ridiculous number of goals he has scored this year. In truth he plays across 2 or 3 positions in one for RM.

I would agree but in fairness he has not been given a proper consistent run by Southgate as yet. I would expect that will change at the Euros.

Bellinghsm is the best player in the world right now. Won’t convince me otherwise. Should win the ballon d’or.
He’s had one of the all time greatest debut seasons at *Real Madrid* and is absolutely bossing the league there.

This means he will break a metatarsal in the champions league final.

So, anything to take away from last night's games?

Football fans continue to misunderstand international football and what Southgate is trying to do (hint - a friendly with a major football team would only increase the risk of injury and international football is much more about being organised and letting individuals make the difference, rather than highly choreographed passages of play like you now see in the prem week in week out).
