I thought it looks the opposite of panicking. He's basically saying he doesn't think the elections give a real impression of feeling in the country and he's prepared to risk proving it. As RJS says it hopefully cuts off all the rhetoric.

I suspect that Macron had planned to pull this trigger once he'd read the polls and been aware of the possibility, rather than let the perception that the far right are truly dominant persist. Still high stakes, even if it has all been thought through by astute politicians.

It's certainly an all or nothing approach, but I'm not sure there's anything to gain from delay.

The far right are in charge of Italy, the Netherlands, Austria and Hungary and they got by far the biggest vote share in France and the second biggest vote share in Germany.
"The centre holds" is fine but the rivals to the centre right are not the centre left or even the far left but the far right.

There does seem to be a much bigger political reaction to inflation than the damage the inflation causes in general; hence the vibe-cession in the states.
Second Germans see inflation over 2% for the first time in 80 years they go far right lol.

Modular companies in the UK seem to be struggling with a lot of the big players having gone bust. If the planning system ever gets fixed then I think it will be an essential part of delivering housing targets but fixing the planning system is the initial problem.

You ought to care! This is the lot deciding all the rules and regs for Britain's major trading partner, and the rules of trade mean the UK will either have to follow those rules and regs or incur quite a big trade penalty!

Re Macron, a theory I saw elsewhere is that he expects the right wing parties to claim a significant number of seats, and thus become part of the new government, where they'll **** things up and make Le Pen less likely to do well in the Presidential election in April 2027.
Cynical if so to call an election for the sole purpose of having a new government that makes things worse for the whole country.

I do think ultimately a lot of those issues are tied in with inflation though.
Energy inflation, blame eco policies.
Housing, blame immigrants.

part of making it work seems to be not using prescriptive regulation and a tangle of local rules, and instead having national performance-based standards
shouldn't be beyond the wit of a competent government, which is a stretch for the uk, but there's always hope
then there's the need for nimby suppression, brownfield with existing access and utilities would presumably be easier to get going

Also the pretty massive prejudice against prefabs in this country (which have been around since the 1940s).
You seem to be muddling planning regulation and building regulation, which are two different things. The latter is already very clearly a national performance based system. TBF, on the planning side there is also the NPPF which sets the framework for all local planning policies.

Yes I meant to write immigration policies, rather than immigrants.
I do suspect far fewer people would give a hoot about immigration if there had not been a Europe wide cost of living crisis though and I also suspect it's not as simple as reducing immigration to zero world suddenly make housing affordable.

A lot of people who supported it are now excusing their decision by blaming how it was implemented.
