It’s very easy to criticise people for being too money oriented and not focused on “quality of life” if the circumstances mean you don’t need that much to get by comfortably.

I don't know how big it was. It was a 2 bed 1979s Wimpy home made of breeze blocks. In a part of the UK with wages.in the median about 20% less than where you live.

Comi5 back to my question, what would you afford in Royston or Stevenage? Because at that time I couldn't afford to live in Stockbridge or Morningside at all. Let alone the south east or Cambridge.

I don't think that things have changed nearly as much as you think.

My house in 2006 was below the average UK price. I sold it 6 years later for the same price, despite redecorating entirely and putting in a new kitchen. Because it was in a not that desirable suburb in Scotland, and Scotland suffered from being Scottish.

Quite. I suppose if I'd bought a slightly smaller house, or borrowed 7 times my income, which wasn't possible at the time, that would be okay. Even though RC could have spent 4 times his income and lived somewhere a bit shit like I had to.Even though he has done better out of price rises than he admits, and could afford somewhere 3 or 4 times more now. And develop some patience. Life is full of compromises and most of us Gen X and Boomers didn't get financial success and big houses overnight.

'Not being able to afford to live in the town one grew up in' covers most of the nice places in Devon (including Topsham), and pretty much everywhere in coastal Cornwall, and has done for two or three decades, while high earners from the SE bought up holiday homes. and priced out the locals, whose families have lived there for literally generations. It's not a new phenomenon.

I think you are being a bit thin skinned. He's only teasing you because you've posted a few forthright thoughts on the subject of 'ambition'. Which is fine. Everyone has a different idea of what's important.
