Interest rates were 5.75 when I bought my first house. My loan was 5 times.my salary.

Not sure who you're replying to, but in any event how does it relate to any of the last few posts on this thread?

It’s very easy to criticise people for being too money oriented and not focused on “quality of life” if the circumstances mean you don’t need that much to get by comfortably.

A two bed end terrace a 45 min commute out of town. I was earning above average at the time. Nothing stellar, but probably top 20% for Scotland in 2006.
0 -
Right, so try the same house, double the commute and go top 1% household and 7x
if that’s all i can afford God help the rest. It’s not im money obsessed - this current system means you need to earn * a lot*

You live in Cambridge. I lived in Currie. Ever heard of it? No.
What could you afford in Stevenage?
I also think that house I bought was smaller than yours l. Probably 800 sq ft. My neighbours were joiners, electricians and basic grade IT people at Heriot Watt.
Should I have had a chip ony shoulder that people with literally half my IQ, no comparable qualifications and no work stress could afford the same house?

lol a good 15% bigger 😜 than my house. Look we don’t need to do this again, cost of living is incredibly high in relation to wages and continues to grow since wages don’t.
I appreciate because you once had a struggle you don’t think anyone else can but, tbf, I would fucking love to kick back and do an average job but I don’t want to live in a shithole or in a house where my two children each have to share a room (not ideal when they’re boy/girl), and so that means I have to earn a dicktonne to do that.
so you can all fuck off with “you’re obsessed with money” it’s easy to not care about it if you don’t need it.
And anyway, I am doing alright for myself relatively speaking, so you can doubly fuck off as at least I’m doing something about it.

I love the way you say 'we don't need to do this again'. And then do it again 😀

I don't know how big it was. It was a 2 bed 1979s Wimpy home made of breeze blocks. In a part of the UK with wages.in the median about 20% less than where you live.
Comi5 back to my question, what would you afford in Royston or Stevenage? Because at that time I couldn't afford to live in Stockbridge or Morningside at all. Let alone the south east or Cambridge.
I don't think that things have changed nearly as much as you think.

Lol clearly you don't

My house in 2006 was below the average UK price. I sold it 6 years later for the same price, despite redecorating entirely and putting in a new kitchen. Because it was in a not that desirable suburb in Scotland, and Scotland suffered from being Scottish.
Will RC forego the increase in the value of his own house? Because that's not "fair" on the younger generation is it?

FFS does this have to contaminate every thread?
1 -
Quite. I suppose if I'd bought a slightly smaller house, or borrowed 7 times my income, which wasn't possible at the time, that would be okay. Even though RC could have spent 4 times his income and lived somewhere a bit shit like I had to.Even though he has done better out of price rises than he admits, and could afford somewhere 3 or 4 times more now. Just doesn't want to.
I am as bored as you are. Fucking millennial whinging.

Stepping into Brian's shoes for a minute, I guess this needs a general whineybollox thread? Although that outdoor see most of the active threads in Cake Stop rolled into one.

The FMW thread has a certain ring to it.

What are you supposed to do if you find an oystercard? I was thinking that using available credit would be theft, but not using it essentially allows tfl to pocket the money.

I want to live in the same town I grew up in you idiot.
why don’t you go live in Uzbekistan? Do us all a favour. Maybe you don’t want to live near your family?

If people don’t want the topic then don’t call me out on it, it’s easy.
“Rick is a greedy money obsessed man” fuck off and understand the real world ya fucking pricks.
Some of us aren’t lazy enough to move to some backward shithole so we can go home at 5pm, and some actually try to work our way out of it. Don’t see why I should get shit for that. Fuck off. I’ve tripled my income in 3 years working my arse off so my family can be both near their grandparents and hopefully one day have their own bedroom.
That’s not money obsessed. That’s taking fucking responsibility. It’s just ludicrious how successful I have to be to do that, as tripling isn’t enough yet!

This doesn't intrigue me so try another thread.

Ok, I regret it, but I'll only say it once, things don't need to be said three times 🙄

Move somewhere cheaper, get your Boomer parents to cash in their expensive Cambridge house and downsize (like you say Boomers should do) and buy somewhere near your new cheaper place. Say Harlow?
And develop some patience. Life is full of compromises and most of us Gen X and Boomers didn't get financial success and big houses overnight.
Then FFS stop whingeing.

I can't afford to live in the town in grew up in.
Diddums.

'Not being able to afford to live in the town one grew up in' covers most of the nice places in Devon (including Topsham), and pretty much everywhere in coastal Cornwall, and has done for two or three decades, while high earners from the SE bought up holiday homes. and priced out the locals, whose families have lived there for literally generations. It's not a new phenomenon.

Neither is struggling to be able to afford Oxford or Cambridge.
I'm not from Devon, Cornwall or Scotland. Pay attention now.

I think you are being a bit thin skinned. He's only teasing you because you've posted a few forthright thoughts on the subject of 'ambition'. Which is fine. Everyone has a different idea of what's important.
