I was told that the best way to avoid your car getting stolen or broken into is to park next to a nicer one.

I have seen people defending such parking because it protects their fancy car being dinged by people opening doors into it (because they are nearly a cars width from the next vehicle)

We had a policeman knocking on doors a few weeks ago giving advice on preventing vehicle theft, I pointed out that my 2015 focus is probably pretty low down the scumbags shopping list given the number of shiny new cars sitting on the neighbours drives and their cars are effectively my security measures.

I think I preferred my Clio (R reg) for fun (despite just an 1149cc engine) and being able to park in small spaces, but corrosion got it in the end, though it had done 180k (I'd done 100k over 10 years), so it did pretty well.

Mine is 10 years younger but will hit 200k miles soon. It would have been way over by now but for the pandemic and moving to working from home full-time.

I won't win, but I don't even want to compete in this one. Seem to recall that from a finance point of view, once you get beyond a certain age/mileage, the maintenance costs start to outweigh the reduced depreciation.

Almost certainly true if you went to a main dealer, but I shouldn't think a 20 year old Almera has seen a main dealer for a while. Bangernomics is the cheapest way of running a car if you're not fussed about what you drive. You need a decent local garage, if you're looking at a big bill it gets written off and you can buy a new one for the cost of a service and a set of tyres at a main dealer.

I service mine myself and would look to fix anything else required, but I've had it 4 years now and its been all good. I don't use it a massive amount, which is partly why I have it of course. Biggest ongoing bill is the VED but, hey ho.

Quite correct, apart from a recall on something or other a few years ago. Brill local garage, £200 this year to get it through its MOT, the only problem being the seatbelt pre-tensioner (I didn't even know it was a thing), for which there was a fault light, the budget solution being to disable the sensor on the pre-tensioner (as the airbag is still fine). Last year was £500, but that included tyres.

TBH, I can't really justify having a car now, but I'm not going to get rid of my ULEZ-compliant oldie as long as it's cheap to run when I 'need' it.

Should do if they are using genuine parts, although that may have been EU legislation I'm sure nothing has been done about reversing it. You could lose out on a bit of goodwill if something goes wrong that isn't technically a warranty issue if followed to the letter. But that bit of goodwill would cost far more than you ever save.
Stevo's way is the better option if you have a nice car as the person doing the work is probably more clued up than the grease monkey in the main dealer. You don't want the apprentice to forget to refill the oil in your nice new BMW M5 after draining it, as happened to our sales director a while back. I worked in what is probably the most prestigious main dealer workshop in London and there were a few I wouldn't trust to top up my washer fluid, some great mechanics too, but you don't know who's working on your car.

It's not a hard choice for me, as a car is just a tool. OTOH, I have got a dozen or so trumpets, a few other assorted brass instruments, and a couple of pianos, and they are all also ULEZ compliant too.
