Don't bother with the warranty. There will be a special "no payout" clause in there somewhere. instead, budget for repairs.
Those things are a hoot to drive, btw.

I'd prefer one of the originals, though I suspect they are like gold dust now.
0 -
To look at perhaps, but the originals are noisy slow unformfortabke death traps.
0 -
If they are unformfortabke, maybe I'll stick with my Almera.

That doesn't speak volumes for Raver's credit rating....

It's the dealerships rate. Similar cost overall to Klarna.
0 -
Guess I'm ignorant of those rates as I've never taken out finance to buy a car.

Amazing. Kudos to you.
OP should be able to get about 7% apr at the moment. Ignore the blow hards.

I suppose some people might find it that.

It's because the amount is right at the switch point. I can get under 10 for 5000+ but under 4999 is 20+ (that's without adding any personal details)
My credit score is a solid "good" according to the apps. I wouldn't have expected much as I don't have any other finance/debt/credit cards etc. to show that I'm good and reliable at paying it off...

Top tips for changing that which I learned when returning from abroad. Buy something you can afford anyway but on H.P. at zero % (assuming this is still available). Use credit cards for everything but pay off the full amount every month.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

My daughter has a F 500. Get the better trim model (tints/alloys/painted mirrors etc) as there is plenty of choice out there. Hers has been trouble free pretty much, just a clutch but that could be her! As above - goid fun to drive.
or, get an original, fit a VW engine and floor it!

Think that's a good idea. Ill see if slicky Ricky is up for that tomorrow...
Maybe I should look at a credit card too later.
Unfortunately this afternoon has been rather a sad one so this has all seemed rather trivial.
(Think the reality is that 4k doesn't count as debt these days...)

Last sentence, sad but true.
I remember being stressed about £250. It was a long time ago but still...

I guess when leaving university with debts of c£50k is normal, then the sort of aversion to debt that my parents had (never any HP or credit cards, therefore never had a credit rating in their lives) is uncommon (and probably all but impossible) now.

I would be wary of buying a Fiat 500 https://www.whocanfixmycar.com/advice/fiat-500-common-problems, Check also Parkers or Honest John for car reviews based on year and model.
Cars that have sat may have local knowledge attached to it and besides (as mentioned before), gaskets suffer from the coolant which can chomp through gaskets and oil degrades which clogs up areas in the engine which requires more than an oil change, possibly 500 miles and then another change.
As for finance; get a loan from a bank - Nat west offering 7.9% apr which may mean opening an account with them but that's easy with uswitch.
Personally, for iro £4k, I would be looking something else - check those sites I listed.

Borrowing money to actually buy a car seems rare these days too unless buying privately as everyone seems to get dragged into PCP and the like.
0 -
True, I don't understand that honestly but I suspect that might be because I'm not bothered about what I drive too much...
A less cynical way of looking at it is that 4K at 10% representative API makes the bank 200 quid a year. Is it worth the hassle/risk at that point now they can't hide fees, upsell PPI etc etc. Probably not...

I was giving someone from running club a lift recently. He had just changed his car as he couldn’t afford the balloon payment on the Mini he’d had. He’d got a fairly new VW Touran but was moaning he’d struggled to get finance and couldn’t work out why as he’d “only” missed one payment on the previous car.

Yeah there's a tonne of those type and age of cars flooding the 2nd hand market at the moment.
If you're up for an EV, some of the latest Porsches are at a heavy discount.
Brand new they're £85kish.
Can pick one up that's 3 year's old,41,000 miles for £43k. lol.

Not sure many will manage the first step of my 4 step car buying strategy but it is easy once up and running.
Save up to buy a car. Do not buy a new car, get 2-3 year old with manufacturer warranty. Immediately start saving for the next one. Run the car until it is a financial write-off or no longer meets your needs.

That's about par for a prestige brand tbh. Few years ago, I got my car, which had a ticket price of about £50k for £28k after 15 months.

Seems to be more so with EVs as it seems not enough people want them second hand. Battery replacement costs seem to be an issue.
For comparison, we just flogged my OHs VW Polo (petrol powered variety) for just £1,700 less than what we paid for it 5 years ago (purchase and sale were from and to car dealers).

Just went to get some lunch and there's a rather expensive looking Aston Martin Valkyrie broken down on Apex corner. I should imagine the bloke sat inside was on the phone to a breakdown company and asking them to be quick as there were a lot of people taking pictures. Just looked it up and seems they are £3m including tax!

Thought those Valkyries were track only, but clearly Aston have made them road legal. Let's hope he doesn't have to drive over any speed bumps once he's got it restarted.

That's where the Citroen ID19 is one up on the Valkyrie.
seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
Also means that the Valkyrie would probably never have got on the Top Gear leader board as Clarkson had a rule that to qualify, the car has to be able to get over speed bumps. (Cracking track btw - me and a few of the Evo brigade had a go back in the day to see how close we could get to The Stig's lap times 😎)

So I dropped my car off to be repaired after it got keyed.
Have a hirecar in the meantime: a skoda kodiaq, which for those who don't know is an SUV. (only option)
It's made me really angry; I can't for the life of me see why anyone would drive it. Worse driving position, worst visibility, worse handelling, and then all the other SUV problems - it will be heavier, less fuel efficient, will more likely kill a pedestrian if you run into someone.
It's not even bigger inside.
Why on earth are they even popular, let alone allowed.
1 -
I have a car question. Why are bumpers now painted on all cars? Surely that defeats the point of them.
1 -
Not driven a Kodiaq but own a Qashqai and a Mini. In my opinion the driving position and visibility are far better in the Qashqai. The Mini definitely handles much better and is far more enoyable to drive (other than on rough roads!). Agree on the size though, it's amazing how these larger looking cars lack space - I put it down to the rounded shape. It's infuriating sometimes when something that should fit in the boot with space to spare won't go through the curved boot opening. That said most SUV are on the same platform as the equivalent hatchback, they are just higher.
