People are reacting to what's in the news, if Sudan had more prominent news coverage there would be more outrage. It's not racism in the majority of cases.
The gay guy you've mentioned a couple of times probably doesn't want to move to Palestine, but is more likely protesting what he considers the unjust killing of Palestinians.

Think you are underestimating the direct connections between the UK and the Middle East in general. We have an MP with immediate family until recently trapped in Gaza. 14 UK citizens killed on October 7th; not to mention we ran the place for nearly 30 years. Add in the involvement of Iran and I think it's pretty obvious why this has grabbed attention.

I’m really struggling with the jump from everyone on here being an apologist for racists for suggesting that the police are wrong to try to prevent a potentially inflammatory situation to a rant about people in the UK expressing support for one side or another (which I tend to find based on a very simplistic understanding of the situation over there).

I think you have something of a point in that some people have more concern for their own pet causes than Gazans or Israeli hostages - that Green Party tweet being particularly blatant. I don't think it's correct to say the conflict has nothing to do with the UK.

Reading this gives considerably more context. I'd suggest that it shows that the police were being extremely patient with someone who was trying to be contrary and trying to provoke a response.

It's pretty standard to keep counter protesters (which is what this guy is) separate from the protest against which they are counter-protesting.

The letter I saw from him stated that he isn't doing a protest march and so won't be giving the police any information to enable them to plan for it. All just seems a bit childish, he quite clearly is planning a protest.

Nah not read it at all tbh. I can’t stand the protests on either side and all it does is confirm my prejudice that anyone on marches about this conflict are various shades of moron. Including our Jew agitator. The hiding behind performative "humanitarian concern" is shameful.

Why are you having so much trouble understanding that the police should first and foremost act to prevent potential conflict then wade in making arrests if there is trouble? It seems pretty obvious that in this instance the guy is deliberately trying to cause an issue. He's not some guy who is just trying to get home from the shops. It's the equivalent of a Chelsea supporter deciding he's going to walk through a group of Milwall supporters whilst wearing his replica shirt.

The problem there is not the segregation or lack of. It's that we implicitly tolerate their appalling behaviour by blaming people for "riling them up" or the police for not being able to keep them separate, rather than the morons.

I thought not. If you did read it, you'd appreciate that the police were doing their best (maybe with some poorly-chosen words), politely and patiently, to keep the peace with someone who wanted to provoke both the police and protesters, in order to get 'material' for his organisation. The trouble with this sort of thing is that it undermines the cause: it's the same with labelling everything that criticises the actions of Netanyahu's regime as being anti-Semitic.

David Baddiel for starters (see Private Eye cover): it's been a way of trying to shut down debate about the actions of the Israeli government for a long time. And that blunts the strength of justified condemnation of actual anti-Semitism.
