I think there will, in the future, be a podcast that will rule them all. It will emerge from the Geraint Thomas podcast run by Tom Fordyce.

Never Strays Car is currently number 1 in the sport podcasts chart so you could say that it is already ruling them all

Never Strays Car has probably been the pick of the pods though

For sure - its not always about cycling but that makes it better for me

I know they're still adjusting to the post Richard world, but I've found the Vuelta pods tough going. Daniel doesn't come across as a natural front man to me

I think he’s held the fort really well, I agree that Daniel isn’t ideal as a solo presenter but bringing other co-presenters or contributors has given it a different feel.

Yes, it's very different. Just not working for me. Feels quite forced joviality but that's just me. Definitely missed Lionel
  • The stage review against the clock I didn't get at all. Why did it need to be got over with quickly?

Has Lionel quit? Can just about deal with Daniel but Lionel's voice just grated on me unfortunately, so stopped listening.

He hasn't, no. He's just stepped back from the daily Vuelta coverage.

I've enjoyed the Vuelta shows, the rotating cast of guest presenters has brought different voices to the show and it's been refreshing.

I really feel for Lionel and Daniel, they've had to cope with their loss of a friend and colleague, cover the major races and work out the future direction of the podcast. I think they've done a tremendous job, all things considered.

I think Daniel is and always has been the star of the show and of all the presenters he's the only one I'll listen to if they're solo.

He has so much intel and gossip and I think I share similar interests with him so even the non-cycling stuff is on point for me.

FWIW, I follow another sports podcast where a key member died (may have mentioned it a few times) and they're now into the second season without him and they're an awful lot better than the season just gone so I think the adjustment just takes some time, which makes a lot of sense.

Through the Vuelta, and following on from the Tour, Never Strays Far/Car has become my go to. I'd like to see the Cycling Podcast succeed onwards and for me, they require a third permanent member to join Daniel and Lionel (who I both like). I've just not enjoyed the recent approach.

I honestly don't see what anyone can see in TCP even before the sad passing of Richard Moore. Lionel brings nothing to the table and Friebe is alright (at best).

My main gripe with almost all of the podcasts in the field is, they tell you only what happened (which you can see yourself), but add nothing towards how/why it happened. Makes me largely feel like I understand a cycling race better than they do, which should really not be the case.

  • I think they've played the hand they've been dealt really well.

I like the way that Daniel's tried to freshen up the format. I thought the rhythm of the Vuelta might have been a dud but I've probably enjoyed that segment more than all the others (outside the team bus, anyone?)

Their rotating roster of guests has worked for me although they've always been 1 COVID test for Daniel from disaster.
They clearly need a new 3rd wheel for the long term and the eternal elephant in the room of Daniel not being available during their largest event due to TV work is an issue too.

I've enjoyed the Vuelta pods although I will agree that limiting the time available to summarise the race seemed a slightly odd choice. All the guest co-hosts were good and it was great to have Fran Reyes back for a bit too.

Daniel has done a good job and I liked Warbasse. I assume that Daniel went for fixed features to help his solo effort. He can rush through some of them a bit when he's reading prepared bits. I prefer the rider interviews.

The Explore : Tour d'Écosse episodes by Lionel B and pal(s) are starting to appear. Local to me episodes 1 Gretna to Castle Douglas and 2 CD to Stranraer have been enjoyable listening, more about the surroundings and locals than just the pedalling.

    @pinno should recognise a chunk of #2.

Just catching up on this now. The way Lionel talks about the ride being a tribute to Richard before the delayed stage 1 was quite emotional. Really enjoying the kind of easy listen that the chat has.

Sad to hear Lionel announcing that he'll no longer be behind the mic for future podcasts but encouraged to hear that they're looking to make some permanent appointments to the men's racing podcast roster.

Hope Lionel's able to make some occasional contributions to 'explore' but am concerned that it's like when Simon left Blue Peter to become their 'special' countryside correspondent, never to be heard of again.

On the odd occasions I have listened it works quite well with Friebe and a rotating cast of guests, to be honest. He always was the best presenter of the original three amigos.

I’ll miss Lionel - I suppose the Cycling Podcast has been comfortable company for me for a few years now so changes aren’t especially desirable given that.

Will be interesting to hear what the full plans are going forwards. I guess Daniel and Brian will do the Giro again but Daniel is usually working for ITV at the Tour and Vuelta so presumably can’t do podcasts too. Not having any or the original 3 on the road will feel strange.

I have to say the break up of the OG three has slowly diminished my listening. Also, when you go to an episode and see it’s 90 minutes long , I find it a bit much. Shame , used to be essential weekly listening.

Yeah Friebe is still the man but agreed, the lack of conciseness means I never get through a whole episode.

Concision's a trend that I've noticed a lot with podcasts of late. They used to be about long form conversation, sticking it to 'the man', and it taking as long as it takes. Now they are 'the man' (or are beholden to his interests) and need to be 30-40 minutes with a commercial break in the middle. Maybe it's the post COVID commute sweetspot.

The day when my podcast app prevents me from skipping through the platform inserted ads will be a sad one (apart from the manscape dot com ones, they still amuse).

  • Given they get paid when the ads aren’t skipped, and you actually listen, can I ask that you dont skip the ads?

Given that I always listen off line, how can they tell? Genuinely curious.

Surely only works for 'real time' online. I also download all mine to a basic robust mp3 device. Unless the download itself counts as a tick in t'box? If so, there's the solution, podcast gets credit while listener skips over the often annoying ads.

Anyway, back to the subject. I reckon Richard Moore was the guiding 'editor', keeping Birnie and Friebe to medium length waffles before moving topic forward. Does seem since his departure the waffle factor has sig increased.
