That'll go down like a lead balloon.

The news will flag anything that goes wrong with any Boeing aircraft at any time, regardless of its age or who is responsible for maintenance. Since the majority of flights are on planes.made by one of two manufacturers, it's an easy story to tell.
That said, for professional reasons I'm aware of a lot of QC issues that might not have made it into the news. Such as improperly secured rear pressure bulkheads or tail fins. Nothing too important.

True. Last time round, men up to the age of 51 were in scope for conscription. So Boomers and part of Gen X will be exempt.

I just scrape in and get to play with a gun (except we don’t even have enough kit for the professional soldiers so I’ll probably have to settle for a few bits of wood like when I played soldiers as a kid).

Completely in line with the review.
"17. The resilience and fortitude of the Ukrainian people has been inspirational, and a reminder of the strength, stamina and adaptability of the human spirit. This re-emphasises the need to provide our people with the skills and supportnecessary to maximise their potential, to unshackle them from excessive process, and to strengthen the connection between the Defence enterprise and society, including through the Reserves: prevailing in war requires a national effort."
One could conclude that they are replacing full time soldiers with part time reserves. Doing it on the cheap, SNAFU.

Sure but I didn’t think the Brits had a recruitment problem necessitating conscription for what is a very small army?

I get the point of national service - it means if you do have to draw up citizens as soldiers they have all been trained in the basics.
But how realistic is it Britain is going to need an army of that kind of size to necessitate that. And if it is, wtf is Britain doing cutting the army down to 70,000 soldiers.
Citizen soldiers are largely poor and you should only want them because you need mass.
This sounds the worst of both worlds

That would be an incorrect assumption, they do have recruitment problems.
For your follow up question, budget constraints. Tech or bodies.

I think the point was that in a scenario where Russia widens its attack, the current size of the armed forces would be wholly insufficient.
I think it goes without saying that the cuts to the size of the armed forces are not endorsed by the same people making this proposal.

I took it as a military bod seizing the opportunity to get some headline space about the size of the armed forces, knowing that talk of conscription would grab people's attention.

It's not just this country though. All countries seem to be on a higher alert level. I think it was the Swedes who started the public militia ball rolling last week.

That would be the whole joining NATO thing. And they haven't ever done away with national service.
0 -
Quite possibly linked to NATO but they are particularly worried about Russia, and they did pause national service for a while.

National service would reduce the number of lifelong fatties in the UK, and undo some of the damage of woke schooling.
Comment.

I think people are belatedly coming to realise that predictions of an end to conventional warfare are not realistic.

You'll be glad to know that an Exeter 'Spoons is reopen again now, and maybe the staff won't be falling ill now they've cleaned the microwave.

Fear not, all will be well once you get called up to defend us oldies.

Thought the same. Considering the struggle Russia is having with Ukraine, whose forces were pretty poorly equipped, I really don't see a situation where they get into a direct war with the UK and by implication NATO. The biggest risk is probably getting dragged into more proxy wars or with Iran completely losing the plot which wouldn't involve conventional warfare.

An 'interesting' piece in the Telegraph. Rather than reflect on why so many young people might be protesting against Israel's actions in Gaza, it's all ascribed to 'generation hate' and antisemitism. Unfortunately the continuing actions of the IDF and the pronouncements of Netanyahu and others about the fate of Gaza both drive the protests and give a smokescreen for antisemites to exploit.

Comes back to Private Eye's point that you can't simultaneously criticise both side on this one without getting an accusation from both of being racist.

Greatest Hits Radio have obviously been paying attention to the news as they just played In The Army Now. First time I've heard that in years.
