I see someone has mobilised the private school families who can only just afford the fees.
Have said previously that I think Labour's proposed policy is a bit of a waste of time, but jeez, the sense of entitlement.

"My husband only earns £75k....after two lots of school fees and a decent mortgage theirs nothing left"
Topped off with a classic whinge about people they know on benefits who get takeaways.
Evidently too thick to work out that ~£30k of school fees is rather more than a few takeaways.

It's a silly poorly thought through policy which, incidentally, wouldn't have been possible without Brexit. Will there be VAT on university fees, nursery fees, private tutors, study guides etc.?

75k salary
Take home 51k
30k yearly school fees
2k a month mortgage.
She's right about there not being a lot of money left!

Obviously I should declare my interest, but it seems to be one that - like the Tories' Rwanda plans - is more about signalling than what it will actually achieve in practice. Even on stark finances by itself it seems marginal, once you bear in mind schools claiming back for inputs and the increased costs in state schools, if many people decide to leave private schools.

Sure. So they can't afford 2 x private school fees if they add VAT. Nor can most people. I get that it stings a bit when you are used to being able to afford things and suddenly you can't, but maybe get some perspective.
And just for the record, yes it is a stupid policy, but we're neck deep in those at the moment.

It's more I don't think someone with a large mortgage and a salary of 75k is responsibly affording 2 lots of private schools fees before any proposed rate hike.

That kind of gives the game away that it's about either bashing the middle classes or giving the appearance of doing that, probably in order to appeal to the politics of envy brigade. Seems to keep few people on here happy as well.

FWIW, I think quite a few people stretch their finances to the limit to send children to private schools. Equally, there are plenty who are extremely well off who could easily afford the extra.

Probably up to their necks in credit trying to keep up with their mates. Considering I earn an above average wage and the wife also works I'm always amazed at what some people seem to be able to afford compared to us. I really don't know where it comes from. Having two kids in private school on a salary of £75k seems impossible to me (unless the wife is also working and earning similar).

I worked out you roughly need to be earning £180k-£200k or equivalent double income for 2 kids to the local private school (£24k a year per kid) assuming a standard mortgage for the house prices around here.
bearing in mind £160k puts you well into the top 1% of earners.
So the differentiator is not earnings really, unless you’re a super earner, its wealth. Most families I know who send their kids to said school have had the parents die early.

Inthink 178 puts you into the top 1%

That too. Although people can spend their money how they want. Last thing we need is people tutting over people not willing to beggar themselves for school fees or vice versa.

That cost of living crisis getting round to those who thought it only affected other people.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Yeah fine. Same maths. It’s a lot.
If the Tory party are all about aspiration I’d call that another failure on their part.
Its become extremely hard to earn your way to privilege. It’s all about existing wealth & inheritance.

An interesting thought - could they appeal on the grounds of discrimination if they don't remove the exemption on all learning?
0 -
It’s more society is increasingly geared to favour inheritance and wealth over ability to earn.
Because it’s all about protecting the retired at the expense of those who work.

I haven't seen any rumblings about that but interesting idea. If it did work it would be interesting as Labour probably wouldn't dare put VAT on other learning related fees. Will keep my ears to the ground on this.

I've always felt there should actually be some tax benefit for people who pay privately for a service provided 'free' by the Government such as health or education as it takes some strain off those public services. Obviously this assumes that the private service is using its own people / facilities rather than taking staff hours from the NHS etc. although even then it can help the NHS retain staff on lower salaries as they can supplement their income.. It does feel like a bit of 'old Labour' politics of envy for very minimal benefit. As someone said above it feels more like a dog whistle to their traditional supporters like immigration 'policies' are for the right.

That's tagging every issue to your hobby horse answer. If anyone thinks this will benefit the retired then they are deluded. How much extra income will be extracted as a % of GDP?

It doesn't affect a protected characteristic, so I don't think so. They will need to define the legislation very carefully though and when that is required, most people should stop and think that it doesn't make sense. It's a classic rookie government mistake which I would be more forgiving of it wasn't their only announced policy.
