Firstly, if you're one of the Orange haters, sod off, this thread is not intended for you as I don't want to give you the opportunity to go on and on about the usual price/quality/value cr@p!

Right,

I have an 08 Orange 5SE and am a little concerned about the quality of the paint finish.
My previous bike was anodised so I'm not too familiar with how bike paint should stand up to day to day use/abuse.

I've had my bike for about 3 months and ridden it approximately3 times a week, mainly cross country with the odd more adventurous ride. Say 40 miles per week.

I've heard and felt a few rock strikes on the down tube and around the bb shell, but nothing that would concern me on my anodised Stumpy, however the paint on the Orange seems to chip and flake off very easily, it seems to be a bit tougher on the swing arm where the chain hits, but I've got 8-10 fairly substantial chips in the paint on the underside of the down tube. These don't bother my too much and I've touched them in with car laquer. However, I've now noticed a chip on the top tube, which can only be from catching the bike on my other one in the garage. I get the feeling that within a year my frame will look ruined! I wanted to get the frame anodised but Orange advised me against this.

Do any other Orange owners, particularly Fives seem to suffer from paint chips?
Mine was not a standard colour and I wonder if it was rushed or poor quality paint!

I'll post some pictures if I get chance

Quick, copter tape it before it's too late!

The toughness of paint often depends on the colour. I'm not sure what kind of paint yours is - my orange Orange is powder coated, which is pretty tough. Warning on Fives is that one of the gear cables rubs & before log will start wearing the metal of the down tube. So get a sticker or copter tape or whatever under it quick. The orange powder coat on mine doesn't seem to get stone chips, but there's no laquer as it's a solid colour.

I don't worry too much about aesthetics, but I use the bike a lot. If you don't & you're planning on selling it on in a year, can see why you'd want to keep it looking nice.

you are so right about that I had a couple of good spots of cable rub in the short time I,ve had mine already. no real chip problems thoguh. don't forget they will dip and respray a chipped frame for you for £150. however I wear my chips like battle scars!!

Use helicopter tape But someone had told me to use a tape from B&Q

I bought Helicopter tape for the down tube and used this tape that came in three
large sheets for the swing arm has it covered the whole one side of the arm
in one section inside and out, rather than bits and pieces
The three large and wide sheets cost only £ 10.00p Its marked up as FX factory effex
    on the packet.
    from onlinebikes.com tel 0208 504 5033

Before I taped up the bike I reccomened you give the bike a good wash and
use Auto Glym extra gloss protection I gave mine two coates of this
and brought the paint work back to life then taped up the frame.

Other than that if you feel you need a re-spray Orange
will re-spray the whole frame and put new stickers etc for £ 150.00p
  • I've got thick copter tape on the swing arm and lizard skin carbon leather patches where the cables rub, but it does seem to me that the paint is very thick and it chips and flakes very easily on the frame.
I ride most places with my mate on his Commencal, he's had rocks fly up and hit his frame too, but none have actually broken the paint.

I'll send Orange an email and see what they say.

On the cable rube thing, I noticed a good rub inside the shock mount, where the cables go under the shock, I suggest you all check in there as mine had rubbed quite hard after just a couple of rides.

Tell me about it - mine had worn through to the frame after the first ride of c10 miles :(

A cable tie round the frame at the right point has stopped that one, and doesn't look out of place. I'm now off to check all the other places listed above....

    Cheers,
    Phil.

I would call personaly and voice your concerns and get them to re-spray it.
Has if your copter taped it and its still happening then there must be a
    problem with the spraying.

The worst place for paint chips on mine is under the swingarm on the drive side.

IMHO, it's a bike to be ridden and no matter what you do you will not prevent all cable rub/stone chips, I just live with it & accept it, it's part of owning a mountain bike, it's like all those little scars on my legs, they all tell a tale of a ride/crash.

I couldn't agree more - after the "New Bike Syndrome" has worn off, it's time to ride the nuts of it and throw it in the garage caked in mud 'coz your too tired to clean it :D (maybe I exagerate a tad, but you get the idea ;) )

Indeed, still not cleaned the mud off my '5' from last weekend in Wales (Penmachno & Marin trails) although I did clean the drivetrain on Tuesday before my usual Tuesday ride!

I've got a fools gold one and apart from cable rub (inevitable with the miles I've put on it), the paint job seems to be invincible.

I've had some big crashes, even smashing the top tube on a giant rock at afan - slightly scuffed the paint but nothing more. Not a single chip on the down tub, BB or Swing arm (copter tape on drive side though). I heard plenty of rocks flying up from the trail at Cwmcarn last night - it's fine - I've even scraped the swingarm on a rock - fine.

Check with Orange though as the paints really do vary by colour. I notice some of the colours that the lacquer starts to go a bit cloudy too - especially the blue ones! Again, the fools gold seems to come up trumps again as my lacquer is still very shiney...

    Hope you get it sorted!

My Disco-Black frame went cloudy but only on the top tube?
Not no more mind used the Auto Glym and used copter tape.

Always used car wax on the frame

My 5 Pro is in Chrome Grey.
I used copter tape on the down tube, swing arm (both sides) and where the cables could rub. The paint is still fine. My mates orange coloured 5 does look dull bur its the top tube and i think its where his shorts rub it. I gues some mer or autoglym would sort it out.

Quick message for Andy_B. bring our mud back to Wales we need it all.

  • Thanks for the advice guys. I'm all for battle cars and a well used bike, I just don't want more chips than I deserve. I do feel that my bike does to have particularly flakey paint, I'll talk to Orange!

The paint on my top tube has dulled from my shorts rubbing it too but other than that it's holding up pretty well. I'm using the B&Q tape which is useless really. I put it on before the bike even had a chance to get dirty and it's lasted maybe a couple of months but now it all needs doing again. Think I'll get the copter tape next time.

I have a sub 5...the older one and the paints well faded, but then you would expect that with about 6000 miles on it.
Personally, I would call Orange, send them digital photos etc.. I have never needed to deal with them, but I know one person ho has and they were very good.
    Hope you get it sorted.
    Jas
it looks a bit steep to me.....
  • Here's a picture of the worst area, as you can see the chips are quite large.
Has anyone else experienced chips as bad as these?

    Ouch. That hurts.

Had mine since May '07 (standard Pro colour of Silver) and its still not got anything that closely resembles that on the frame. In fact its holding up extremely well considering even after plenty of rocks pinging the frame, drops, forgetting to put the swingarm protector on, etc, etc.

Someone even asked if it was new t'other day.

Definately speak with Orange on this one as it has 1 years worth of paint warranty on the frame.

Mancunian When I had issues with a shop I bought mine from
I drove upto Orange and rang the front door bell.

I dont know where your from but a lot of money for the bike thats ment
to be built tough and the powder coating is chosen for that reason so
    they say.

Its a long drive from London but well worth it for me.
Let them see and tell them how gutted you are.

Please keep us informed and good luck.
  • 48 miles away.

I know what you mean about just turning up, I'm off tomorrow too!

    hhmmmm goes to think.

Mate I had a 4 hour journey there and back and I had
to do it a second time too.

48 miles is less than an hour away lucky you

Get in and drive serious, pointless going back to the
shop they dont have the answers and probaly say it was where
    your riding.
  • UPDATE

Spoke to Orange Warranty this morning, they said the paint shouldn't chip easily because it's powder coated. They told me to take the bike to the shop and let them have a look, I asked if I could bring it straight to them but they said it would be best if I went back to Leisure Lakes, so I did.

I was prepared to be fobbed off and was already thinking about the email I was going to send to Orange, however....

The guy in Leisure Lakes, said straight away that they would strip the frame and send it back to Orange for a repaint. Result!

Shiny new frame coming up - Good Times!
No Orange 5 for 2 weeks - Bad Times!

Oh well, I suppose I'll have to slum it on the hard tail for 2 weeks, either that or build the Stumpy back up..
