Nice one a good result
  • Bunch of AR5E, Just had a phone call from Leisure Lakes, apparently Orange have said the paint is fine and the chips are wear and tear so won't be coverd by a warranty, so no respray unless I pay for it!

So no bike for two weeks and no respray!

Unlucky. I suppose it was worth a try though. Look out for trail debris in future. It might be worth living with for a year and then getting it resprayed. I doubt Orange will be changing the 5 anytime soon so a simple respray will bring it right up-to-date and have it looking new again. Mine is now over a year old and its certainly something I'm considering in 09.

Two weeks is not too bad. My bike went into LL for a service a week early due to having the forks done at Mojo. For some reason they didn't take them out and post them until 2 days before the service meaning i had to wait a further 5 days before the bike was ready.

Two weeks without the bike and the best weather the UK has had. Pants. What is even more disappointing is that the night before I'm supposed to pick the bike up I fell badly at BMF and fractured my shoulder in 2 places. Therefore still no riding. Gutted. Not ridden since 17th July. Considering a large amount of Ibuprofen and a gentle fireroad ride around ladybower just to spin the legs. Need to be fit and ready for Penmachno and Betws-y-Coed August BH.

Sorry for the thread jack, had to get that off my chest.

That sucks, my frame has been subject to a lot of stones and hasn't got a single chip on it. That paint can't be right.

I agree, it's even chipped where it was lent against another bike!

I'll leave it for a year and then, I'm going to get it anodised. The annoying thing is, I'd discussed anodising with Orange before I bought it, I was going to get the frame bare and get it anodised myself, but they told me the paint was very hard wearing and anodising wasn't necesary!

I was going to suggest that too - dealing directly with them may yield better results.

  • Damn them oranges they are blood crap! (joke)

must admit my fools gold finish seems hardwearing enough, I think you have just been unlucky.

As I mentioned before, there really does seem to be something about the fools gold paint job that is insanely hardwearing...
  • Well, the plot thickens, I sent an email to Orange but as yet have had no response, (I struggle to call them from work).
Yesterday LL rang to tell me that the front traingle of my frame has been damaged in transit and I will be getting a new one, but not for a week or so. It all sounds a bit odd to me, so I'll be checking the serial numbers of the frame and swingarm when I eventually get it back, if I ever do!?!

I rang them to ask if I could but they were adamant that the bike shop was the best option.

To be honest, I just want the bloody thing back chipped or not, so I can enjoy riding it, because at the minute I'm just sick of it! :x

I feel your pain. Mine has been back to the lbs 3 times now to investigate the source of a creak. Originally I thought it was the bottom bracket as it only occurred when I was pedalling. Turns out it was the Hope headset and now that it's been fixed my bike creaks no more. In the process I've barely ridden over the past month.

I ride most places with my mate on his Commencal, he's had rocks fly up and hit his frame too, but none have actually broken the paint.

This is a colour thing as well, the white Commencals paint falls off very easily. I've seen loads of posts whining about it. Black ones seem a bit more reliable, even then though I've got a few cable rub marks, nothing too bad yet though.

Still, at least you get the option of a respray, even after a few years abuse it would be nice for that new bike look :)

Wish more bikes were anodized, seem to be less and less recently :(
  • Woop woop,

    I've finally got it back!

New front triangle, rear swing arm re-painted and new decals, I even got a packet of protection stickers thrown in!
The only annoying thing......I'm away now 'til Tuesday so can't ride it yet! Aaaarrrrggh!

The new paint looks a lot thinner than the original, you can see alot more detail of the welds and stamped in serial number! I hope this means it won't chip as easily!

looking good, bet you cant wait to get it dirty again eh?
  • It does look mint at the minute, so I've mixed feelings about getting it filthy again, but I'm bored of riding hardtail for now!
  • I got given a 'half pack' of protection shield, so I've done the swing arm and where the cables rub, I 'm going to put some sort of protection on the down tube and BB shell too.

I've also given the whole frame a good coating of Auotglym.

Guys, I'm ordering myself a 5 on Monday and would like a bit of advice.. I've been speaking with Orange over the last couple of days about 08 V's 09. Ordering now and I'll get 09 Fox, 09 frame but 08 Hope brakes. I was thinking of getting a 5 pro with:

    Mono M4's
    Float RLC 140
    The Hope pack
    Performance Pack

Just wondering for another (isn't it always...) £75 get the AM one, anyone tried out teh Fox 36 talas forks?

Just wondering about the paint job, is it true that one colour seems harder wearing than another?? Any tips please? Cheers.
  • As you can see from this thread, I have the Chrome grey and the first frame I had was very prone to chipping, the paint seemed very thick but also very soft, my new frame, also in chrome grey seems to have more of a shine to it and the paint looks thinner so will hopefully not flake as easy, but only time will tell.

As has been said, the 'fool's gold' seems to be hard wearing, whether or not it's any harder wearing than other colours, I couldn't say.

I picked the chrome grey as I felt it matched the forks and Hope mini Pro brakes the best, disco black does look fantastic too but wouldn't have gone with my grey forks. Fox website suggests 09 Floats are white. Go for a white frame I say!

Just out of interest, did Orange say what the differences are on the 09 frame? Mine was only built last week so I hope it's not too drastic!!!!

My '06 '5' in Chrome Grey has no chips on the downtube & it's been hit loads of times, but under the swingarm on the driveside is another matter, but hey ho it's gonna get some dings sometime.

another one! 5 owners are everywhere, I would say the fools gold finish seems quite hardwearing but don't get it as thats what I've got and I don't want it to look too common  joke,

not sure about the 160mm talas, as I run mine on 130mm revelations and it is fine for me with those forks.

I would definately go for the performance pack though because it will work out cheaper if you haven't got the bits to swap over already.

    good luck.

Cheers guys. As for colour will probably decide tomorrow in Glentress. Just need to find out some useful info/feedback on the 36 talas. So any views appreciated.

As for the differences in frames the guy from Orange said it was only going to affect the small sizes to help with fork clearance so only the 14 & 16.

My 5Pro is in chrome grey, which is the fastest colour that orange do. (joke)

You mentioned that you had a creeking noise when peddaling. My bike was the same. The cure for mine was to change the scewers. This stopped the problem. I have Hope now and clean and grease them fairly regularly. I think that as the frame is quite large and very hollow it amplifies any sound. It did take me a while to figure out the problem. I should have asked the shop where i purchased it as they told me i could have a free set as orange had identified the scewers they supplied were not up to standard.

saw that one and thought " I'm not getting sucked into the my British is better than your rest of the world" so I stayed clear, seems to be the same old arguments though!!

have you got your 5 yet? I know you will.

We tried different skewers but unfortunately it didn't help. In the end it was the Hope headset that was at fault. It works just fine now.

I have 5 pro in pearl black and the paintwork seems durable. I just spent 3 weeks doing bits of riding in the alps and the only marks really are dented (rubbishy) stickers when i let it fall over :( I have the performance pack and the 09 RLC fork and they seem good - the bars are beautiful. The forks were plenty of travel for me and never felt out of their depth. Only one niggle really; why no bottle bosses? I know we all have camelbacks now but I just want a bottle for an hours pootle with the kids! I had to buy a rubber band type contraption from decathlon that straps a bottle cage onto the frame (It actually did fall off once so I'm not full of confidence)
    But - I love my 5 - I really love my 5!
