fwb2006 Mate thats what I done in the end I have the 2008 model the forks are more than fab only thing I have changed is the rear mech to a long one and put an extra
ring up front to give me more peddle power when doing trail riding
You dont have to worry about the 2008 hope 4´s these are fab and have just been
updated and are better.
The forks have just been changed again so the 2008 model weighed 5 lbs
the 2009 model is now 4.6lbs.
Scrap the tyre if they dont come with the High Rollers Put the
Schwalbe Fat Alberts on or for extra protection put the Alpine Cross Fat Alberts on
Fantastic grip all round the radius of the tyre.
A great spec bike that is never out of its depths, a bang on all rounder0 -
Cheers Grantway, well mate, I'm pretty gutted. Took out the 5 on Saturday in Glentress and the 20" frame felt a little too small. Yeah, I can raise the seat but I don't want to be perched on it, want to be part of it. Really gutted, if all was 100% I'd have already ordered mine today. her eis a thread I started looking for some advice. http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12583134
Its by far the best bike I've demo'd over the last month but wish they did them in XL, need one with a 22" seatpost rather than 20. I suppose I could just put a few spacers on the front to raise it but not sure how much it would change the feeling.
Thinking maybe of a specialized enduro pro carbon sl as the 2009 has the 36 talas on the front and they do an Xl @22"0 -
fwb2006 wrote:Guys, I'm ordering myself a 5 on Monday and would like a bit of advice.. I've been speaking with Orange over the last couple of days about 08 V's 09. Ordering now and I'll get 09 Fox, 09 frame but 08 Hope brakes. I was thinking of getting a 5 pro with:
Mono M4's
Float RLC 140
The Hope pack
Performance Pack
Just wondering for another (isn't it always...) £75 get the AM one, anyone tried out teh Fox 36 talas forks?
Just wondering about the paint job, is it true that one colour seems harder wearing than another?? Any tips please? Cheers.
Assuming this isn't too late, I'd say no to the 36's personally. Had a set of them on a commencal mini dh, and whilst it was great for that, they are dedicated freeride forks and as such massive overkill on a 5.I'd give my right hand to be ambi-dextrous0 -
I've had my 5 AM for only 3 weeks so cannot comment on paint durability yet, but fine so far (pearl black).
I'm liking the '09 RP23 shock and '09 36R talas forks (which are silver), set at 130mm mostly. The maximum travel of 160mm is probably overkill for general trail centre type riding but I got them because they would be stiffer than any of the float 32s. Don't know if they are noticeably stiffer than the new float 32s with the 15mm axle but they match the Maxle rear end. I also upgraded to floating rotors, Hope seatpost QR collar and a Fizik Gobi XM saddle.
Although the M4s are '08 I've never wanted the bite point and lever reach adjustment that the '09 levers offer (I've run M4s on my hardtail for over a year). The two adjuster knobs on the '09 levers look like they might get knocked in a fall anyway.
Could be wrong but as far as I'm aware the frame remains unchanged for '09. The Maxle's a new option though.
I'll get back to this thread with how the paint holds up in a month or two.
Oh yeah, I've swapped the Raceface cranks and chainrings for the Hone cranks, 26t and 36t chainrings and bashring off my hardtail. Also running an XT cassette, lower roller chainguide and Highroller tyres0 -
fwb2006 Sorry to hear But the Enduro with the Fox forks will be fab a lot of
people including a friend of my who rides an 06 Enduro frame will be looking
now at this has its a fab frame but not to sure about him going for a Carbon frame
But a personel choice.
Regarding the 5 I would ask the shop to do the changes on there demo bike
and have that for the weekend if not longer and also demo the Enduro.
Also give Orange technical deparment a call and ask them for any answers.
Good luck0 -
2009 Orange five isn't worth waiting for by the looks of it...
I was at Coed Llandegla and Orange rocked up doing a demo day for a local dealer. Got to see an '09 Five and not a lot has changed. There's some extra folds on the front of the swing arm (where shock attaches) which actually makes it slightly less pretty. They've also slightly slimmed down the top tube and added a gusset under the the headtube to give more fork clearance. Otherwise - it's the same bike. He said it's slightly stiffer and lighter but openly admitted that the weight and stiffness figures were only on paper and you wouldn't be able to feel the difference.
Oh, thanks to the dude from Orange who gave me a free mech hanger (was on my last one and on a weeks riding holiday) - great customer service!0 -
Sounds like the main triangle has taken changes from the Alpine 5
Be intresting to see. The 5 continues to evolve0 -
I'd have taken a photo but after the free mech hanger I thought that might have been taking the p*ss a bit...0

-
Dude, it's really nothing new!0
-
I know, but as I have said before, I'm a tart and want the latest toys!0
-
LOL Looks like they have given the new swing arm of the Patriot
and again the 5 is last in line.
Apart from that I agree with Zero303 there is nothing new
you still have a 10 out of 10 bike in La La Lancashire
You can always buy the new swing arm if it bothers you0 -
The '08 swingarm looks way nicer IMO...0
-
wait until you've seen the new one...0

aoart from a few foldsa and bends here and there, is there much real world difference between the 08 and the older versions of the five? is the geo and pivot position the same for example?
it must be hard for orange to release a new five when theres nowt wrong with the current one, but i spose the british biking public expects new bikes to be, well, new!0 -
-
i competely agree, orange have obviously got it right, it would be fool hardy to rush out to replace a prefectly good bike with the same bike, if that makes sense.0
-
I think the only major tweak to anything over the last couple of years has been the introduction of the dropped top tube on the frame, other than that it is pretty much the same beast over the years. Also as it changes so slightly it means only the real bike anoraks will now what year it is. It also means you don't feel left behind from year to year. A solid investment in a frame if you ask me. (which you didn't!)0
-
bu i always like to hear from a satisfyed orange owner, you know me!!, atleast your fork hasnt just exploded and needs a warranty repair already :?0
-
Anyone got any spy pics of the new frame?0
-
PHC its going to be a bit like the Alpine 5 which is on there wibe site under
proto types in the my Orange part of there wibe site but without the adjustable
part of the frame what the patriot has.
Just wished I brought my bike with me to Torremolinos long and high mountains
here. 8)0 -
It's still much close to the outgoing five than the alpine though - if the guy hadn't have told me and had just ridden by, I wouldn't have noticed I don't think...0
-
So the 5 remains the 5 and unchanged from the '07 version apart from a few minor tweaks.
Is the new Patriot the Alpine 160?

Mik0 -
No they only made 25 frames in total through out the frame sizes
there is a few 14 inch ones left.
For what i heard is that they was testing a new Patriot out on what they
learnt on the Alpine 5
I know that the head angle was more relaxed than the standard 5
on the Alpine 5
But have seen the 09 Patriot and no changes yet, may be still testing.
Thanx for getting new pics for what I see I prefer my 5 AM
and have the same angle to those who have the pro/se verison when
me forks are at 130mm which do actually measure 140mm and have
the relaxed anglle at 160mm on the fork.0 -
I think some of the Orange owners on this thread need to get out more or alternatively hang their bikes up on the wall so they don't get chipped and muddy.Commencal Meta 5.5.1
