Lovewales, I get where you're coming from and it's great you can do all those things, but in saying that you love to prove men wrong you're in fact just as bad as the chauvinists you're trying to outdo!
It's not about competition or who's better at what, it shouldn't even enter your head that you have to prove yourself to men, you don't have to prove yourself to anyone!

I love being able to prove men wrong - the more they say I can't do something the harder I try.
Unusual things that I can do (all meant to be male dominated)
1. Ride a motorbike
2. Weld - came top of 30 for this
3. Operate Lathe's Milling machines, horizontal and vertical boreing machines.
4. Change a piston and rings on a motorbike
5. Replace brake discs/pads on a car (I did this outside where my hubby was working cause he had all the tools at work much to the amusement of his boss)
6. In 15 years on the road no accidents (touch wood)
7. Read maps properly!!
8. Tow a caravan
9. Spent day riding round dalby red route with a broken wrist
So if anyone says I am slow I say stuff you I go at my speed which has just slowed as I got older (falling off seems to hurt more)
If every action has an equal and opposite reaction does that mean I will be eaten by a fly?

Your right cazzdevil - just saying what annoys me - I don't mind slow riders in front buts it curtesy to ride in single file not 3 aline so they can natter with each other - same with walkers walking down paths all aline and not in single file, also horse riders just annoying. AT the same time I never see many blokes cycling together blocking off paths for overtaking, most guys ride in single file. Just a observation. And no ladies don't smell, most shops sell a wide range of luverly perfume0

What REALLY used to grind my gears was when I used to go swimming there'd always be a couple of women paddling up and down the pool, obviously attempting to do breast stroke but their hair would be bone dry, make-up absolutely perfect, chattering away about the days events and they'd pull faces if someone splashed them with water, and they'd ALWAYS seem to be in my way when I was trying to do laps.
Polymer - jokes aside you should put a bell on your bike and give it a couple of rings when you're nearing them so they know to pull aside for you.

Cazz
I was not really trying to prove men wrong! I just like doing things others say I can't do. And it always feels great when I get one over on the OH.
I think most of my competative nature comes from people constantly telling me I can't do things. I have a hearing problem and lots of people think it means I can't do certain things that I can. I also worked for a long time in a male dominated environment, which meant I had to prove that I could do my job as well as anyone else there.
I remember one time my OH getting really annoyed when a bloke starting talking to him about my motorbike and would not accept that it was mine. This has changed in recent years as more women get into doing other things - I was known for many years by people my age in the local town as the girl who rode the motorbike - my OH even knew of me 3 years before he ever met me.
Sometimes I think my life would have been easier if I had been born a man - but then I wouldn't get to spend hours shoe shopping!

I don't really think a bell would suit my carrera fury cazzdevil mmmmmmm I might buy a fog horn for it that would shift them out of my way ) to save myself being lynched it is'nt only woman who block up lanes you do get a high number of older men 40's upwards who enjoy this sport hmmmm what really gets me is horse riders who ride alongside each other and look down on us poor mountain bike riders as being 2nd class citizens when we try to get past......0

I wasn't having a go - believe me [:D]
I'm a complete hypocrite when it comes to it because I hate men taking pity on me but then if I'm blatantly struggling with something I expect them to help. Poor souls, they just can't win!

I know you wouldn't have a go Cazz! but I think all women have the desire to do something that men say they can't - then look all helpless when it suits us!!

But at least we can say we tried! My other half doesn't fall for it anyway, if I put on my helpless look he just tuts and says "aw here man woman [Geordie turn of phrase], just get on with it". Seems to work as I'm not bothering with the helpless look much now.

What is v annoying is hurtling down a track to find a couple of ladies slowly riding causing you to loose momentum and speed. 9 times out of ten it will be a female holding me up (v annoying).... I'm sure some ladies are excellent at riding but the vast majority are moving chicanes.....

whats even *more* annoying is blokes assuming all women are slow, so take dodgy lines to overtake (before their unaccustomed puff runs out), misjudges your speed, so cuts you up in the process, then once in front slows down because they're tired from trying to overtake (which then holds us up), refuses to let you past because his pride will get hurt, then stops to walk down the first dropoff he gets to, totally ruining the run for the girls behind. the amount of times that's happened beggars belief.0 -
I don't see whay woman try to be like men, we are both mentally, and physically different, men are stronger and quicker its just evolution men became the hunter, gatherers, so had to adapt to that role, while woman took on the role of looking after the home and children. All these femminists who go on about equality are mad!!! I mean you wouldnt let men and woman compete against each other in sports as it would be unfair, even F1 does'nt have any female drivers, again a very physical sport BUT in my view woman should be treated as equals but should'nt be expected to live up to being equals.0

It's a useless debate anyway.

OMG!!! I was trying to say that I believe in equality and woman should be treated as equal as men.... But I don't think men should expect woman to be equals - by that I mean doing activities which require greater strength etc like I don't know - being a brickie, cycling at same speed, able to cope with steeper hills... Its a very fine balancing act i guess...0
-
I should embelish a bit then:
It's a useless debate anyway, because Polymer's got it pretty much spot on.
[:)] I agree with you, women will never have the capacity to be as strong or fit as men but that doesn't mean we should be treated any different for that. Just as there are aspects of being a woman that men will never match up to, it works both ways.

Stuff TyMBR In my dreams Myspace My flickr photos0 -
i don't see why a man would try to be like a woman by riding mountain bikes.
don't they know that they should be out there earning our crust while we're out doing our nice little hobby.
i find it annoying when you get the DH lads on 8" of travel in the alps blocking up the trails on the gnarly sections. still, good fun overtaking their big red faces on a 5" travel bike.
maybe they should stick to something a little less technical. bikeybikey0 -
Exactly Cazzdevil you have put the words I meant to say in a far better written way lol. I hope muddyfox ad lovewales understand where I'm coming from now, its not about being chauvanistic (which i'm not) just looking at things in a sensible way.0

Polymer, please excuse this post since it isn't meant to be some kind of personal attack, but it seems you've got quite a hang-up about Them'n'us's without even realising it. At the start of this thread, it seemed as if you were almost assuming men and women to be different species, then you went on to draw a line between yourself (presumably fairly young) and men over 40 years old. Then you followed it up with an observation (that I've never seen in real life) that put horse riders and MTBers on opposite sides of yet another fence.
Everyone is different, and each person will tend to compensate for their weaknesses by playing to their strengths. Unfortunately, your view of the world seems to be based on one group (those like you in some way) VERSUS all the others (those who differ from you in some way). Sooner or later, you're going to end up only seeing yourself on one hand and everyone else on the other hand, and that's a hell of a chip to have on your shoulder. I'd suggest trying to focus on common ground instead of differences, and see how much more positive an outlook you end up with.

That has nothing to do with being female though. If I were struggling with something I would expect my friends to help regardless of who's male or female.
This is all just a nonargument as anyone can hold you up if they aren't as quick as you, anyone can be out for a leisurely side by side chat ( I've been held up at Glentress by a bloke and his son before, didn't worry me though, they have just as much right to be there as me ).
Polymer74, if you want to own the trails you might just have to get up earlier in the morning![;)]
Cazz, swimming pools are the WORST. I've given up going unless its really early. I keep getting drowned by other peoples freak waves. What does make me giggle though is if someones holding you up in the lane designated for faster swimmers, swim underneath them. Best way to overtake and gives them a wee fright![:D]

i'm pretty sure he's just on a wind up.
however, recently i started thinking i might start having to think about my physical limits after doing a 12ft drop on to a less than smooth transition, because it took a lot of strength to land. it was a doubt i should not have had. i'm not sure if any of you have heard of barb haley. anyway she's a candian. this is her in action http://www.bushpilotbiking.com/vPaneIma ... x240_3.jpg
maybe as far as pro's go we can't compete at the highest level, but on all levels lower than that we can. no problem. i know a 15 year old girl who dirtjumps and does bigger gaps than a lot of the lads who've been riding for years, and she's smoother too. an amazing new talent in a sport which is very male dominated in this country.
the sky is the limit. quite literally. i don't really care what any bloke thinks about women not being able to keep up, because i disprove it every time i ride. [:)] bikeybikey0 -
Its just consideration really, ifs it not a wide track you ride in single line not in pairs - thats my only point really, quite often when you tearing down a twisty track (built solely for bikes) you will find inconsiderate horse riders blocking your way. I have nothing against anyone majorbloodnock just a wish for more consideration thats all... That is a good idea saz to get up earlier in the morning, perhaps 4am lol. or better still invest in a good pair of halogens and get up at2am in the morning...0

of course. what's that specifically got to do with women though? have i missed something? bikeybikey0

erm?? when do you ever get tight twisty tracks built solely for bikes at anywhere other than trail centres?? Everything natural is bridleway which is open for everyone, including leisure cyclist and horse riders
At everything bar the top level women can compete. For instance, you'll never get a woman having the fastest 100m time in the world, but at a sport/recreational standard it's all down to how much training as to whether men or women are faster/stronger/more technically adept0 -

I think that anyone who rides slower than others needs to show some common sense. I regularly ride with my kids who have progressed onto more techinical red routes. They struggle with parts and we often stop talk about how to get over/round that bit. Most of the people we meet are generally of the opinion that everyone has to learn somewhere.
If you are going faster than someone else just shout at them that you are wanting to pass. If it is us we always move out of the way and if its myself or the OH at the back keep an ear open for others coming.
Passing someone is just a matter of common courtesy.

This is really getting out of hand now.
My points were
1) Its annoying to get held up by ladies, men, horses, walkers who don't walk in single file on paths (fairly logical statement)
2) Women are equal to men but men shouldnt assume they are always equal in terms od doing activities where more strength, endurance is required (again logical statement - men and woman are built differently)
3) Men have a better sense of balance which helps them to ride faster and with more confidence (fairly easy to understand comment)
4) Everyone is different some woman are better than men and vice versa - I would imagine Johnny Vegas to be a crap rider and the same for Dawn french so on that account some woman are better than men at riding and vice versa
Hope everyone understands my points now[:D]0
