Best riders.....

Funny question but who are the best riders? Mem or ladies? I've had the misfortune to get caught behind a couple of older ladies travelling at about 5mph down a track chatting about soaps, in my limited experience ladies don't like to go full out but look at cycling as more as maybe a leisure/chatting activity and if it helps to get fit all the better. Am i right or wrong. Without wanting to go too far men seem to have a more natural sense of balance which perhaps helps us to go that bit faster....

I think that's a bit like asking whether it's men or women who're the better car drivers. IMHO, it depends on how you define "better". Faster? Stronger? More technically adept? More confident? Get more enjoyment?

I know that women make up the minority in my MTBing circle of acquaintances, but despite a few differences in riding styles, I don't see that translate into an overall difference in ability. All just based on my personal experiences, though.

Polymer - the ladies you got caught behind are obviously leisure cyclists and not mountain bikers. You reckon women don't like to go flat out and have poorer natural balance? I'd disagree with you on that one, my balance is as good as most of the lads I ride with and granted I don't like to go FLAT out but I don't exactly do 5mph down tracks...

Neither sex is necessarily better but a lot more men mountain bike compared to women so it makes it seem as if they're better.

I currently corner like a granny on a trike, climb hills ..........eventually and occasionally giggle nervously on decents. I would bet money on Cazz, Saz or Mudface (apologies to any of the other ladies out there but these 3 sprung to mind) wiping the floor with me so I'd say your well and truely wrong, unless of course you're calling me a woman in which case that's a different matter altogether, but you'd still be wrong there too.

My g/f mountain bikes. She doesn't do it reguarly enough to have tonnes of confidence, which is the only thing that holds her back. She's pretty quick though, just hesitates on the steep bits.

She's quite athletic though and is used to competing in male dominated sports (she's played football at a very high level and makes most footballers look stupid).

Occasionally you'll see a girl stuck at the top of a steep slope or a drop off on the trails, but they are invariably dragged out by their much more competent boyfriends and thrown into a pastime they are not used to. The same result would happen if it was the other way around.

There's an australian girl I often see on Holmbury Hill who rides everywhere at speed with a mad excited glint in her eye, always followed by a team of much less fit men who are quite obviously partly in love with her while being extremely conscious that they are constantly being shown up by her. Always makes me laugh.

That's often the case especially with the b/f, husband, etc pushing them outside of their comfort zone to start with. I've been guilty of this in other sports only to be surpassed by the other half and then fake disinterest and go and take up another sport where I can feel superior for a while.

Needless to say, I don't do that anymore.

Personally i don't acctually know as i have never been MTBing with any women. BUT i would have thought they could be easily as good as men. There is nothing that stopping them [:p]

define riding an MTB.

What is v annoying is hurtling down a track to find a couple of ladies slowly riding causing you to loose momentum and speed. 9 times out of ten it will be a female holding me up (v annoying).... I'm sure some ladies are excellent at riding but the vast majority are moving chicanes.....

Couple of top tips for you.

1) Other cyclists whether they be male or female and probably horse riders and walkers have as much right as you do to the track.
2) Girls do not smell or have fleas.
3) If it's that much of a problem go out earlier/later, during the week when it'll be quieter.
4) Please don't continue posting this kind of thing otherwise we'll see a post stating that 9 out of 10 men are sexist, clueless, egotistical wonders.

Just as it is on a public road, both those in front and those behind have equal right to be there. If what floats your boat is attempting to go faster than anyone else, you have to live with the likelihood that you'll catch others up and have to (safely) overtake.

Sorry, but I don't see the scenario you described as the slower riders' problem, but rather yours instead. They're enjoying a ride out on their bikes, and they're just as entitled to do it at the speed they want as you are, and such a situation is just as likely to arise with slow male riders too.

Perhaps if you have better control of your bike, it won't be a problem.

There are plenty of basic skills courses around. I'm sure google can help.

I know it's hard to believe but I was once six years old and was convinced, as were my primary school chums, that boys were superior thus leading to the conclusion that girls were smelly and had fleas. Thankfully I've grown up alot since then.

My girlfriend got me into mountain biking and is easily as good as me and she gets annoyed with her (female) mate who rides down the trail in a wheelie. No matter who you meet on the trails/roads it's great to say a quick hello and how ya doin? whether they're on a bike, horse, foot, canoe (only last wkend in the rain) you meet some really interesting people - there is plenty of opportunity to throw yourself around with noone nearby so just enjoy it.

I love being able to prove men wrong - the more they say I can't do something the harder I try.

Unusual things that I can do (all meant to be male dominated)
1. Ride a motorbike
2. Weld - came top of 30 for this
3. Operate Lathe's Milling machines, horizontal and vertical boreing machines.
4. Change a piston and rings on a motorbike
5. Replace brake discs/pads on a car (I did this outside where my hubby was working cause he had all the tools at work much to the amusement of his boss)
6. In 15 years on the road no accidents (touch wood)
7. Read maps properly!!
8. Tow a caravan
9. Spent day riding round dalby red route with a broken wrist

So if anyone says I am slow I say stuff you I go at my speed which has just slowed as I got older (falling off seems to hurt more)

If every action has an equal and opposite reaction does that mean I will be eaten by a fly?
