Anyone around tomorrow for a ride out that way? What is it like for mud at the moment? I usually ride at Epping but that's practically impassable except for the fire-roads, etc.

Have to get home and fit my new cranks though!

May sounds good. I'm off for a 19 mile loop from Princes Risboro shortly if anyone fancies the ride. Hopefully Ellesse (Dave) will be joining me, just waiting for a text from him.

Just in case anyone else wants to come out to play...... 11.30 at Princes Risborough train station!!! Rooty woodland singletrack, fast descents and apparently a couple of good pubs too!!!

Just got back in......some advice to all, Princes Risborough to Wendover is VERY muddy at the moment (your wheels can be 25% submerged in mud) and whatever you don't do, never ride when you have mild food poisoning! I had to turn back after 5 miles of muddy climbs

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/guilliano/
  • food poisonined bike riding is never good.

the mud is pretty gloopy round there unless there has been a dry spell, and even then it just seems to make the mud stickier. last time i rode there i nearly wore my tire sidewalls down to the kevlar cos of all the mud clagged around my chainstays.

never mind it'll be summer soon.

have you tried woburn trails - thats near you isnt it.

As Gulliano said, it was <u>very</u> muddy.
Sorry again for forcing you to carry on.
When you headed back the trail went into downhill extreme mode and the mud turned into sort of pebbels which made a change and was really nice to ride, after that it came to a short road section with nice hidden houses until i reached a forest of mud (or swamp).
I thought i would push on as it could't get any worse, but of course it did, lost the map, (and the will to the live) and decided to head back. Found Bacombe lane and asked someone how to get to "Princes something-borough" ended up taking the road back. :(
Defently a trail for the hotter days of the year when the mud has less of an effect in my mouth.
    1-0 to princess Risborough.
  • Ah - the Chilterns mud - haha!

Think I may go out on the roadie tomorrow after last week's experience on the MTB!

    Here's to summer!

If you want to keep it off road at this time of year you are better off sticking to Wendover Woods ( Forestry Commission place), yes it's hardly extreme but there are enough up and down trails that don't suffer from being swamped in mud. If you set off from Weston Turville/Wendover you can use the Wendover arm of the canal to get you near and then a short hop across the Halton road into the woods. There's even a fantastic cafe up there to break the ride up. I tend to just use it in the winter but use it as a finishing point in the summer.
Better than coming stuck in the mud or just using roads ?!

I'm headed to Wendover woods tomorrow for a bit of a ride. Stomach a bit better today so gonna risk it.

Ellesse, you didn't force me, I was desperate for a really good ride. The direction I headed when I left you went straight downhill for about 3/4 of a mile... mud/gravel covered road that would have been great fun if I hadn't stopped to be sick in a bush!!!

If anyone is free next Saturday let us know and we'll sort out a decent ride where the mud doesn't make a concious effort to kill you!

  • I`m really hoping the current dry spell will dry out some of the tracks this side of Hertfordshire.Hertfordshire clay just stops you dead in your tracks.
I have had to resort to riding mosly on road,on my last couple of rides.
I could almost justify sticking some slicks on it![:D]

  • I was out yesterday between Stokenchurch and Bledlow Ridge. I had hoped that a few dry days would have improved the trails a (little) bit.

But no - unbelievable heavy claggy mud all around. Must have been the slowest ride I've ever had. [:(]

Spiderman what sort of tyres are you using? I used to have problems with clay when I was using Panaracer Fire XC Pro 2.1s but now my problems have been greately reduced now I have specific mud tyres. This is a photo of my bike last Wednesday:

    http://img50.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00369ie3.jpg

My old tyres would have completely clogged up going through that sort of stuff but these ones the mud doesn't stick as much.

  • I`m using Schwalbe Nobby Nics, which are OK in all but the deepest mud.Did wonder about getting some Trailrakers but by the time I get them on the trails will probably have reverted to baked Hertfordshire clay, and it will be time to roll out the Racing Ralphs![:(]

My last forays off road have resembled your photo Bighead![:D]

Yeah the Panaracer Fire Muds are the opposite to your Schwalbes - Useless in all but the deepest mud ha ha ha. They quite slow on the road and don't handle that well but seem to be the best tyre for the winter in Hertfordshire as they don't pick up the mud. When these wear out I will probably go for some Schwalbe Mud Sharks as they are meant to be better.

Im from South Herts. Yeah I forgot I put that Barbados on there. OK well I went out this afternoon in my shorts. I was thinking it was summer for a while. Anyway I went past the spot the last photo was from and I took another photo:

    http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img2928xv6.jpg

Most of the places I rode around today were increadibly dry, but of course the mud was seriusly screwed up with horses and tyre marks and just dryed hard so it was difficult. Obviously some places which were in the shade were a bit muddy by appart from that - fine! I hope to get another photo next week if we have snow.

  • Is this thread still happening?

I don't live in Herts, Beds or Bucks but my bike does. Blame the chronic lack of space zone 2. I'm keen on finding some new trails in the Herts, Beds & Bucks area if anyone is up for it. At the moment I focus on two main trails, The Nickey Line (long but fairly dull) and the Aldenham Loop (short, tyre shredding, saturated for long parts of the winter but otherwise great).

Swinley sounds good! This time with a chain that doesn't 'suck' big-time! I've only done it once (with you!) and the last time I rode the Chilterns I may have still been riding my fully-rigid DB, possibly the Corratec, so at least 2 <font size="1">1/2</font id="size1"> years ago.

My local knowledge is sadly lacking but my excuse is that I've only been here two weeks and one was for moving and the other was Easter visits to family...
