Yeah, the use of historical for everything is annoying. Breaking the 4 minute mile was historic, Hassan’s treble was historic, Alfred winning St. Lucia’s first gold was historic. Why dish it out to things that aren’t? I suppose you can argue everything is historic once it finishes

I will give a stab as to why it’s historic. (It’s not really, but until those sources you quizzed come up with something better)

    1964

    1984

    2004

    2024

Now all we need is for the first 4 in 1984 to fail retrospective drugs tests and Lorraine Baker wins!

  • Ooooh. Like what you did with Tessa Sanderson there.

But if we're expanding past the 800m then historic events need to be just a bit more historic to beat Mary Rand who won a gold, silver and bronze in athletics, also in 1964. Girl Power was a thing before it had been invented.

The other thing I heard someone say in commentary was that Vollering was looking to become the first woman to win the race twice - it was only the third running of it so there hasn’t been many chances for anyone else to do so.

  • There was similar nonsense in the Olympics when someone on Twitter was bigging up Katie Ledecky for being the first woman to defend the 1500m freestyle title. I'm all for bigging her up, she truly is a wonder, but not for that, as she's won it the only two times it's been held!
