Vollering staring daggers

I am playing catch up, so I am currently watching the women climbing the Glandon. No live coverage of the bottom kms, but it must have taken them well over an hour. It’s hard graft, to say the least.

A few photos from the top of the Alpe d'Huez today, with just over 3km to the finish. Not busy further down the mountain compared to the village, but still a great atmosphere.

Excellent photos, thanks.
I am descending the Glandon and it certainly beats today’s Vuelta stage.

Was an excellent stage. Vollering was betrayed by her team this Tour. Kasia did a tremendous job of just holding on and was really fortunate to have Lucinda Brand in her group from Trek (who was riding for Realini).

Amazing Russell...nice one

Thanks, guys. Great racing and a quiet part of the road at hairpin 3. There was a guy doing his best to entertain the riders by playing his saxaphone just next to me, so I need to thank him for some of the expressions on the riders faces. 😄

Demi Vollering has changed her status to "sour" after TdFF loss but AdH win.

Really pleased for Kasia. Finally she got a bit of luck and then managed to hold on to the leader with grit and determination. As I said before, too often she has had no luck and ended up just missing out.
Good day for Canyon with 1st and third on the GC.

It's mad how Eurosport (Discovery? whatever) have such an excellent roster of co-commentators, but all three of their main commentators (Hatch, Kirby, McDonald) are just so, so annoying. Needs a real shake-up.

Not sure his approach is the way to promote women's cycling, but maybe I'm "old school" and prefer to make my own judgements based on factual information provided.
He should watch the Spitting Image sketch where Coleman "goes too soon" and ends up with his head exploding as he got hysterical with an entire lap to go. Marty was hysterical with about 5k to go. 😡

It might be to do with his main job of commenting on Cyclocross as often someone buggers off early doors and after that there’s not a lot of excitement. So he doesn’t get to see much proper racing😉

If the commentary was done with the same level of enthusiasm as the shipping forecast you guys would still think it was over-torqued

Each to their own I guess. I could maybe forgive the hysteria and the cliches if he'd actually highlighted the racing situation as it developed, namely that the clock was ticking along alarmingly from Kasia's perspective, and the final result was going to be exceptionally close. If you listened to the commentary without knowing the race situation and being able to do some mental arithmetic with the clock info, you'd have thought Kasia won comfortably, pulling wheelies over the line or riding backwards to justify the hype.

This is impressive!

I saw that and though it was very impressive. Compare that to Jay Vine (?) trying and failing to get his jacket on during the covid-Giro.

Kelderman I think? Either him or Jai Hindley as both were at the front of the race with Tao. Whichever one it was it pretty much cost them the Giro didn't it?

Great photos @rstandring - thanks for sharing!

Lloyd was able to commentate with a laid back style that was easy to listen to. He didn't feel the need to make the race out to be anything other than a viewer could see for themselves and if it was boring he wouldn't pretend otherwise. Stephens is the same. Cycling can be dull; sometimes the whole day is dull, other times there are a few kms of excitment and occasionally it can be mad from start to finish such as the Froome Giro stage. Some of us will find the level of excitement higher than others but what it doesn't need is a commentator yelling about how amazing it is for hours. It may be coincidence but it seems to have become more prevalent since a US company got involved.

Oh no, you are wrong :-). The pundits have labelled it "the greatest finish to a stage race.... Ever!!!!"
Relative to lemond/fignon it was effectively a time trial up l'alpe d'Huez but in 1989 the 8 second gap was after 3 weeks of racing taking in 3,300 kms taking in the Pyrenees, Massif Central and Alps so not really comparable. 8 seconds after all that racing was truly phenonomal.

By the time I had finished watching the stage, I realised that I had a headache.
Even the usually tranquil Matt Stephens, at the finish, behaved like he’d just finished a mammoth coke snorting session.
When everything is so far over the top, it becomes obvious that it’s just bad acting.
On an unrelated issue, Dutch corner was very disappointing, yesterday.

Dutchies go on hols on July, Frenchies in August. So not a lot of pass the Dutchie on the left hand side possible.

It was the chap playing the saxaphone next to me - it wasn't the best, but it amuzed the riders. 😁

Of course it's not coincidence.

Notwithstanding my rant about the man on the microphone, I thoroughly enjoyed the actual racing!

It hasn't afflicted the BBC athletics commentators yet, but this sport too is going down the road of endless hype. Both UK Athletics and Athletics Weekly described Keely Hodgkinson's 800m win in Paris as historic in their social media outputs. Neither of these outfits has responded to my request for clarification as to what exactly was historic about her run, given that:
- Someone wins the 800m every Olympics
- Two British women have already won it
- One of them - Kelly Holmes - also doubled up with the 1500m gold
- The other - Ann Packer - also broke the World Record and won silver in the 400m for good measure
And to top things off, Athletics Weekly is now claiming that she is "on the brink" of breaking the 800m WR, despite her PB being 1.5s off the pace.
Just to clarify, I think Keely's great, and - life being as it is - she won't be short of a bob or too via sponsorship given she's blonde and "pleasing to the eye", so she really doesn't need any overactive hype machine in the background.
