Changing of the guards confirmed. Kane as an automatic first 11 is done.

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

We could have done with going behind a bit earlier. We're lethal once forced to be exciting.

Can't help but feel they should be able to make better use of the top scorer in Europe?

England midfield sitting too deep again and inviting Spain to attack them

Why? You be soaked in beer after the 73rd minute.

On the other hand, one more goal and you're right.

Pure class from Spain the way they took control after our goal and brief period of pressure.

    ... but not that goal.

    Good decision to stay home.

So it didn’t come home after all?

    Sack Southgate, he’s useless etc.

We did well to get to the final but Spain are different class, they have been all tournament.

It's like comparing Pog to Vin on current form.

I'm glad Southgate has done well enough to not face an inquisition.

Is there a touch of the Stuart Lancaster about Southgate though. Wonderful chap, brilliant culture, proud to be English etc but lacks the "x-factor" to win the big games

Mr Mistiano Penaldo is at it again putting the possession stats up just as Harry is giving his "we played well and were unlucky" spiel*

You know what, having grown up watching them struggle to qualify for major tournaments and not getting past quarter finals, Southgate's time in charge has made a nice change.

Nah Lancaster was in charge for the 2015 world cup, that was much worse than lacking x factor!

Southgate's got to the finals in two Euros and the semi finals of a world cup. I do feel England wasted the group stages this time around, as they could have used it to work out where goals could come from with Kane misfiring, but Southgate's record is really impressive.

Has to be the end of Southgate - thanks for what you've done but the same failings cost us again.

Spain just schooled them, should have been 2 or 3 goal difference

Probably 4th or 5th best team in that tournament - Spain, Germany, France, Portugal - at least.

Southgate is excellent at the off field stuff, making camp a good place to be, and getting the players into a group who want to do things for each other.

However, his negative style of on field football will never win a tournament. I will get you to finals and semis, but when you need to go out and win, he will always come up snhort. He is the sort of manage who needs a really top quality coach alongside him.

That's 3 tournaments in a trow where Kane has effectively played in the midfield leaving England without a centre forward. Time to look at someone else to play in the 9 shirt.

A lot of the squad are still really young so if they can find a manager / gameplan that plays to the strengths of those players and allows them to show their talents on the pitch, then the future remains bright.

I think he could build something significant in a long term job at a big club if he was a bit quicker at recognising when something isn't working and needed changing, that seems his biggest weakness to me.
