I still ride a bike - ok mostly on strava until it gets closer to 20 degrees outside and mostly these days gravel riding in a rigid MTB. I was even thinking of going back to vets road racing some time though I've no idea what the level is for over 55s - also about a stone over race weight.

Oi! I don't mind the 'fart' but less of the 'old'.

Go for it DeV, I would guess the vets racing standard is probably a good mix of abilities.

Whilst I'm not an e-bike lover i do believe there is a need for them for some people. A colleague at work who insists on working even though 70 recently got himself an e-bike on C2W. He only lives 2 miles away but given his age, size and he has COPD he is an ideal person for one. As i see it anyone that gets on a bike and pedals is on a win win scenario, getting fitter and saving fuel etc. As to mileage I'm down to 3k a year but hoping to increase it a bit more as i get more free time. I Sure as hell don't give a monkeys how fast i go or others. Tends to be more gravel / lane orientated, although some of the gravel stuff is at the rowdier end. Just recently started out on bike-packing so a few sedate miles will be added there. The mtb is still pressed into service but not so much as i don't bounce like i used to, last off put me in hospital with blood poisoning / septicaemia.

Before I broke, I was on a simple cycling plan of completing over 10,000 miles a year. According to Strava I did over 1 million feet of ascent in a good year.
That was then, now I don’t monitor any metrics (Garmin stashed away and no Strava), but certainly not making 5,000 miles. I just ride to keep some form/fitness and hopefully not get poleaxed. Hope to be able to step it up one day, but can’t say that looks likely
Not sure I’d have ever coped well doing repeat 400 mile weeks in the mountains in the heat, even at my fittest!

I think the main thing for people that ride because they can rather than having no choice, Is that it's a great way to destress after a hard day. Just have to watch out for the odd nob driver.

I started riding again after a 12 year break when I was 37. My intention was to get fit again and start racing as a vet. The problem I soon discovered was that all my contemporaries from racing in the 90s had kept going and the good guys from back then were still winning against people 20 years younger get a lot of the time. Racing had got so much faster (and there were far more dangerous muppets with the fitness but no bunch skills).

I was late to running. I only started running regularly in my 40s so hopefully won’t have too much of a problem. I get issues with my shins but that is mainly due to tight calves and since I realised that sports massage has helped. I’ve got my first ultra in August.

When I raced as a vet some twenty years ago, it was rare that there wasn’t some ex professional riding such Neil Martin, Ian Hallam or Phil Bayton riding.

I've been 20,000 kms for each of the last 3 years, split roughly 50:50 indoors and out.
Suspect I won't get to that mark this year due to too many holidays.

I would imagine it is similar today at the top end, there are likely to still be a fair few top guys around kicking everyone's arse!

Neil Martin was a regular at my club’s award dinner. I think he came as a guest speaker originally but then came most years afterwards and would join our morning after club run. He eventually persuaded Roche to come and be our guest speaker one year (1996 from memory) and he also did the club run.
Makes me feel old that their little kid from back then is now a well retired pro himself.

I used to do a lot more as well. Hard to get the mileage in when it is more than 200m climbing per 10km. And working the hours I do.
I try to get in lots of 1-2 hour rides to mimic a commute and keep metabolism ticking over. Good for catharsis and thinking time. Quite often I resolve work issues in my mind before I go back for the evening stint. Plus it provides natural pain relief and the Dorian Gray effect.
I also do rowing for the same thing. That's a more emersive experience, boom boom. But seriously, the rhythm, the concentration required and the comparative quiet is more like mind-laundry.
And some strength work, because I can't run or walk that far.
Use it or lose it.

Does he use the Phil Liggett commentary as his walk on track?

Dan used to own a bike shop in Girona (not sure if he still does?). Neil used to work in there. Very nice chap, have hired bikes from there in the past.

Haven't registered yet Seano, just being lazy! Will get it done this weekend. I'll stick to the same as long as it lets me, or some obvious variant if not!

Easily pleased aren't they!

Yes they are!
Quite strange given the amount of daily posts. I'm fairly certain that I've miss a shitload of threads as it is impossible to keep up with.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Some of the posters there make us look like real part-timers, both in the number of posts they read and like, but replying to loads of posts too. I suspect that there will be a few threads that BR folk will keep returning to, once we've found our way around, and ignore the chaff... there's an awful lot of near-duplication of multiple threads doing virtually the same thing.
Probably a bit too soon for the refugees to start advising how CC should be run though... give it time.

No advice, just swamped.

And I'm learning how nice I am from them too 😄

I had a load of trophies off them before I even made a post. I’m also ranked Uber, not sure if this is good or if I’ve been nominated to give other members a lift.

Wow, you are so nice! Almost sickly!

There needs to be a miserable old bastard thread.
I should probably get onto the politics forum and satiate my need for an argument.

One guy with a US flag will be happy to accommodate. 😉

As opposed to a miserable old bastard forum?
