Stage 10:- Parc Vulcania to Issoire, 167km
Tuesday, July 11
Start Time: 12-05pmBST.
Stage 10 on the Tour de France sets off from Vulcania, an educational amusement park in Saint-Ours-les-Roches. The 167.2 kilometres route traverses the Massif Central to finish in Issoire. The former volcanic mountains – called Chaîne des Puys, i.e., Monts Dômes – are lined up in the stage and made for attacks and so offer perfect conditions for breakaways.
The route goes either up or down during the entire day, but only three ascents are classified KOM climbs. The vertical gain adds up to over 3,100 metres. The route climbs from the start, which means that the battle for the breakaway will get underway with the drop of the flag.
The Climbs.
Final Kms.
The Côte de la Chapelle-Marcousse is the last climb of the day: 6.5 kilometres at 5.6%.
The KOM timing on the Chapelle-Marcousse will be taken just before the topsummit, while the actual summit is crested with 24 kilometres remaining. The rest of the route goes virtually all downhill.
What to Expect.
The 10th stage is way too hard for sprinters and GC riders have nothing to gain. So that leaves only one option open. It will be an attacker who will cross the line in Issoire. Van Aert, Van der Poel, Pidcock, Alaphilippe – those are the names that spring to mind. But to win they have to get into the breakaway.
Vulcania
First time venue
Population: 1,660 in Saint-Ours-les-Roches.
Vulcania, the "European Park of Volcanism", is an educational French amusement park and museum with a volcano theme. Situated in Saint-Ours-les-Roches, Auvergne, 15 km north-west of Clermont-Ferrand, it was officially inaugurated in 2002.
VULCANIA AND CYCLING
The peloton already rode in the immediate proximity of the site where the Vulcania park was established in 2001, notably during the climbs to Puy de Dôme or on the way up the Ceyssat pass, reached first in 1951 by local hero Raphaël Géminiani and then in 2020 by Simon Geschke. Two great races on the Auvergne and national calendars take place close to the park, the Circuit des communes de la vallée du Bédat, which has seen riders as prestigious as Richard Virenque, Jean-Christophe Péraud or Romain Bardet win, but also the Durtorccha (organised by the communes of Durtol, Orcines and Chanat), which boasts riders such as Nans Peters or Kevin Geniets on its list of winners.
Gastronomy.
Auvergne potée
The potée is one of the rustic dishes designed to better cope with the winter weather. Therefore, the Auvergne potée is a dish composed of many vegetables including cabbage, turnip, carrots and potatoes. Meat such as lean bacon, pork leg and sausage are also added to make the preparation a success. When the ingredients are combined, they are simmered for hours in a large pot and the cabbage is roasted with the sausage. In keeping with tradition, the broth is poured onto thick slices of rye bread on the plate.
Tarte aux myrtilles
The Auvergne isn’t known for its cakes and pastries, but for something sweet, its tarte aux myrtilles during the summer months is a real treat. Local blueberries are easy to come by in the warmer months and so this pie is a real staple of the region for at least half of the year.
Issoire.
Stage town for the 4th time
Population: 15,300
Issoire, a town in Auvergne with 15 000 habitants, is ideally located in the Puy-de-Dôme department, in the plains and at the confluence of the River Allier and the Couze Pavin. 25 minutes south of Clermont-Ferrand. Issoire has been called the gateway to the south because of its highly colourful architecture, tile roofs, and mild and sunny climate. For centuries it has been known as a “fine Auvergne town”, famous as a place for trade and fairs. Today, the richness of its material and immaterial heritage has earned it the “Most Beautiful Detour in France” label.
ISSOIRE AND CYCLING
The Tour de France has visited Issoire three times, but only one finish took place here, in 1983, when Pierre Le Bigaut raised his arms. The Breton rider led a long breakaway to win his only stage in four participations. Issoire has been used as a starting point for stages to Saint-Étienne (after Le Bigaut's victory, where Michel Laurent won), to Le Puy-en-Velay (2005, victory by Giuseppe Guerini) and to Saint-Flour (2011, victory by Luis Leon Sanchez). Issoire also hosted a stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2021, won by Brent van Moer. The town has also held the Grand Prix d'Issoire every year since 1927, with winners like André Darrigade, Rudi Altig, Tom Simpson, and more recently Romain Bardet, who won twice in 2009 and 2011.
Gastronomy.
Supreme of Issoire
Suprême d'Issoire is a meringue-macaroon biscuit, containing a praline cream, developed in 1950 and exclusively produced by the Couronne d'Arthur pastry shop in Issoire. The brand was registered by its creator, Pierre-Henry Stéphane Mazzerole, who passed it on to his successor, Julien Dussère, in 1973. The latter recently entrusted it to Christophe Gignac, the last custodian of this recipe, which is particularly appreciated by the town's gourmets.
Saucisse
With pork aplenty, saucisse will be on every menu from little cafes to the city’s restaurants. There will be the option to eat it alongside other traditional dishes, like aligot or as part of a Potée Auvergnate.

Wonder if any of the outside GC men will try and slip into a break - and whether Jumbo will let them hoping other teams will ride to preserve placings in the top 10.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

Even then the thinking would be that other teams would chase, and the time gained would be monitored while watching each other.Pross said:

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
