The Big 'Let's sell our cars and take buses/ebikes instead' thread (warning: probably very dull)

Do you honestly think airport developments are independent of government?
0 -
No, obviously not, but I do think people who run airports are best placed to initiate such projects.

In terms of strategic and economic importance I don't know if that's true.

Agree, If the Government is wanting to 'level up' then it needs to encourage / help / initiate infrastructure projects in the regions, and if necessary, block other schemes that would disadvantage those regional projects.
In the case of airports it is then deciding which ones are worth expanding, so maybe Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester , to reduce the need for so many people having to travel to Heathrow and Gatwick, and all the negative congestion that adds.

No wonder everything keeps getting blocked.

Bristol is already undergoing massive expansion (having already expanded significantly over the last 25 years). Manchester is the only airport in the UK outside the two big London airports with more than one terminal (it has 3 passenger terminals and a freight terminal whereas Gatwick only has two), it is also one of only 3 UK airports with more than one runway alongside Heathrow and Edinburgh. It is currently merging two of its passenger terminals.

I am flying less than I would have pre covid. Why? There are less flights being operated so options are cut. I don't know the reasoning but and it's not worth the time transferring for a mini-break. This may explain some numbers dropping.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

Not within his gift to order it as I understood it.

King Donald.
He's going to end up making George III look sane.

@Stevo_666 . Looks like you will soon be able to go skiing by train from St Pancras. They're looking to open routes to Geneva.

Ta. We went by ski train a few times back in the 90s, was good fun. St. Pancras would be very handy for me as fairly near the office and also reachable from Sevenoaks by a direct train.

Not quite sure where best to put this. It's an interesting idea but feels a bit niche as I can't see there being a huge amount of traffic looking to go from South West Wales to South West England but would be more than happy to be proven wrong.

That looks like it has only just got past the two men in a pub stage. They're at the dizzy heights of having a drunken idea and one employee now.
They want to run an unknown type of zero emission boat between two, perhaps more, unknown places.

Yeah, I was slightly surprised the Council seem to be onboard (no pun intended) without there being a bit more meat on the bones. Considering Swansea to Cork couldn't even survive I'm struggling to a see a market for a ferry from a dead end section of England to a dead end section of Wales. It would certainly be good for anyone who regularly makes that trip but I can't see there being many of them and if people are going to Cornwall from South East Wales they aren't going to drive west for an hour first to catch a ferry.

But Chris Grayling is no longer in a position to hand out £multi million ferry contracts to e.g. entities owning zero ships...

It's nuts. I think there used to be a paddle steamer doing that, but it was really just for tourists. As you say, you dump 'em in North Devon then what? It's a PITA journey from there to anywhere vaguely big - best part of an hour via the North Devon Link Road to the M5 & Exeter, two hours to Plymouth.
Yay, let's go to Barnsaple or Ilfracombe then. From Swansea. Yay and thrice yay.

If there's a fast ferry I can now think of not taking a weekend break in Swansea not by sea rather than not driving.

Good news for Londoners' lungs.
"Levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) - a toxic gas that exacerbates asthma, impedes lung development, and raises the risk of lung cancer - across all of London is estimated to have decreased by 27%, the report found.
According to the study, which looked at data for 12 months from September 2023, air quality has improved at 99% of air quality monitoring sites across London since 2019, and London's air quality is improving at a faster rate than the rest of England.
It also found:
- NO2 levels in outer London were 4.8% lower than expected had the expansion not gone ahead
- Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) exhaust emissions from cars and vans in outer London were estimated to be 31% lower
- The London-wide compliance rate for vehicles subject to Ulez standards after the first year of the expansion (as of September 2024) was 96.7%
- For people living near London's busiest roads, there was an estimated 80% reduction in 2023 in people exposed to illegal levels of pollution, increasing to 82% in outer London, compared without Ulez
- There were nearly 100,000 fewer non-compliant vehicles detected in London on an average day in September 2024 compared with June 2023.
The results have been checked by a group of independent air quality analysis experts.

But what about the person who has to pay to drive a fridge freezer across London or something?

Thanks Heavens my l'il 'ol V8 is ULEZ compliant. And to add icing to the Cake, I'm paying the same in road tax for it as my other half pays on her 1l Polo. Can't see me getting rid of The Panzer for a good while 😊

Meanwhile, my recent Manchester to London return train journey was £385, both legs were delayed - the morning one by one hour, and I can't even claim a delay repay because the operator can't find any timetabled journeys that match my claim.
Except I selected the trains from the ones that appeared on their own website 😡. But they are telling me those don't exist.
Next time I am going in my car.
