The Big 'Let's sell our cars and take buses/ebikes instead' thread (warning: probably very dull)

Not really. You said this about motorists "Just bored of 'motorists' thinking they're special and being such a bunch of professional victims."
Your wife is a motorist, so was wondering whether she knew you thought this way about her. Unless of course you didn't really mean to make a sweeping generalisation generalisation about motorists?

Nope but have gone from 25k miles per year to 10k.

I've given you a like Pross to make up for it.

I accept that more than three people are still on the forum. I just named the two most argumentative, and Brian for balance.

Glad you think the claims of a war on motorists are exaggerated. I don't think anyone needs to be any more pro motorist than they already are in a relatively dense city with multiple public transport options across a huge area.

We didn't bother owning a car for several years when there were just the two of us. When we wanted to go somewhere without public transport access we got a hire car.
Even now the cats spend more time sheltering under it than we spend in it. It's a useful thing to have for when we need to move something heavy or we're going somewhere that is difficult to get to via PT, but that's all it is.

😄 Do you think we don't talk about stuff? It's fairly obvious I was talking about the kind of person who believes there is a 'war on motorists'.

This. When I lived and worked in a city a car would have just been a hindrance. That changes when you move out of the city though.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
I disagree. So does Stevo, but only because.

Thanks for confirming that cars are for moving things or going places 🤣

I'm not so London centric to think that it's all about London. I recall we had to explain to Rick that what might be OK for London doesn't work for large parts of the rest of the country,

Don't make sweeping generalisations then 😉

It was very specifically bored of 'motorists' - not all people who use cars - who think they're special. It's not some protected characteristic FFS.

As I see it the special ones are those who think it's a good idea to keep upping costs and regulations on car drivers.

Cost of driving is falling in real terms. I thought you said you didn't believe all the war on motorists bollox.

Got some facts or a source to back that up?

Some of you care too much about being right rather than what's right.

Self driving cars will make traffic worse in cities. More bus lanes are needed.
Out in the sticks, I think we're a long way from it being a reality.

Standard rate for VED was £140 in 2015. It's now £190. Which is equivalent of £140 in 2015 money: no real terms change.
A tank of petrol (58L) costs £82.74 at the moment. Nine years ago the same tank of petrol cost £85.58 in today's money: real terms decrease in price.

That graph shows they 'all motoring' costs as the second highest line below insurance, so does not back up your claim.
In any event, I only said that it's the people who want to increase costs and regulations on motorists. So even if you are right, that would just show that they're not very good at it 😉

Those are not real terms figures. Inflation is way above the rise in the motoring costs. I've given a couple of specific examples: petrol is now cheaper than it was 10 years ago. VED has just kept track with inflation. Insurance is definitely more expensive, as it is for all other types of insurance - not sure we can pin that one on tax or regulation. Which motoring taxes or regulations do you think have increased?
Anyway, my main point is that vehicle owners don't have too many reasons to feel hard done by. As you suggest, if someone was trying to wage a war on motorists, they wouldn't be doing a good job.

You've just answered a different point as mentioned above.
Although its funny how a lot of the car driving majority don't share your view.

I don't think it is a different point. Mind you if an indeterminate number of people feel hard done by then that must be valid, right?

I explained above why it is different. To recap, people wanting to increase costs (my point) is different from the factual matter of whether they have increased (your point).
But don't worry, you're still very much in the running for the 'arguing with the most posts that Stevo makes in Cake Stop' competition 😉

Sorry, who are these people who want to increase costs, exactly? Do they actually exist? I don't think I've seen anyone set out as a primary objective to make owning a car more expensive.
On the second point, what else are we here for? 🙂

I'd like to make owning a car more expensive. Hope that helps.
