What's often missed when referencing peak Barcelona tikitaka was the sheer graft they put in to get the ball back if they lost it.

    this, exactly.

Look at Barca, look at City - its the sheer graft, positional awareness, teamwork to get the ball back when lost.

City work on 5 second turnover retrieval, Barca the same. The rest of them - not so much.

We know Rick can't see this so we'll kindly ignore his post and let him off.

Rick - don't confuse tikitaka with gegenpress or sudenpress - 3 different things, the third of which was a major foundation of the Dutch offensief flankerend of the mid 60s onwards which we are sure you are aware of.

Yeah. I read the same comment. I read it as, if you have the likes of xavi, inesta, messi all on the same team, you can really rattle through a short-passing, heavy possession game and have all the incisive passing you need because they have that incredible skill.

Spain's current midfield does not have that ability, so they just pass it around a lot and don't score much.

It just seems a very specific solution to a very specific set of circumstances, and without that context it's sh!te - and we can see Pep thinks along similar lines.

And anway, since I am over-reliant on Football Manager, I am clearly all over Gegenpress as for the last 3 iterations that has been seriously OP.

it has been around for 30 years so it is more than a specific solution (ie false 9)

Not really. In the iteration we all know as Tika-Taka it's basically since Pep's Barca team.

The phrase was certainly not in use till then and I think it's different to the Cruyff approach; it's a derivative of, sure.

Cruyf was the founder and his work was carried on by his dutch successors, by the time Pep was in charge the pipeline of kids indoctrinated in it was bearing fruit.

This is the most open WC I have seen in my lifetime. You could make the case that of the 8 qtr finalists, 6 of them (I am discounting Morocco and Croatia as I can't see either winning it) are genuine contenders.

You usually have 2 or 3 teams at most who are really likely to win it at this stage, the fact there are more this time should make for some good matches for the rest of the tournament.

I mean I wasn't watching the game that closely but I think to make it work you need movement and rotations to shift the opposition and create overloads and Spain looked a little bit static and safe.

Precisely. Tikitaka done properly is not just passing for the sake of it, it is passing to create space to exploit. It takes a lot of work.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

  • One of those games that is so tight and tactical, it has been good to watch. Croatia have definitely imposed their game plan better than Brazil. Has shown the blueprint to stop Brazil and highlighted a lack of options in their game.

He's in the same category as Ronaldo for me. I can't stand him for some irrational reason but no doubt he has some balance and awareness of the goal
  • Never count out Croatia... I have learnt this to my cost :D
