To say Ed was disappointed is an understatement. His Strava comments afterwards probably didn't help either.
Ed said himself that the Strava comments were posted when he was highly emotional straight after the event which may not have been the best idea.
He also said that he congratulated AF in private afterwards.
Ed is a really nice guy so I don’t believe he posted those comments in spite (for the want of a better word). He was genuinely shocked that AF had beaten him despite his best ever performance.0 -

no, 18 seconds is worth more than a couple of Watts you lose by carrying an extra 300g.
Incidentally, I just bought some Force shifters 11 on sale… incredible those weigh 310g, whereas the hydro stuff is well over 500g

After 4 years of testing, today I have beaten the hour on a 25 with a road bike.
59.26 on the R25/7 course in Wales…

Thanks… my bike is as close as a modern race bike can get to a traditional road bike of the days… 30 mm rims, no integrated cables, no aero frame, no aero bars, rim brakes. It was important to me to reach the target without buying my way to it, if you see what I mean.
That said, next year I will replace the 42 cm bars with some 38 ones… I think they are still acceptable, I have seen old photos with folks on narrow bars

Agree. It is ludicrous you can have 90 mm deep wheels in the road bike category, or stick normal aero bars on a TT bike and claim it is a road bike. The idea of the road bike category was to open up TTing to a wider audience who didn't want to compete in a full on arms race, but the CTT messed that up so badly.

Good achievement. I think I would struggle to break the hour on a TT bike, no chance on a road bike!
On an equipment note. Nice to see Sram Force. I have an unsued group that I bought a while back. As I have switched to a DB winter bike it will likely never get used but I can't bring myself to sell it just in case.
I also have a pair of Rapha Classic shoes. Strangely I bought them 2 or 3 years ago, wore them 4 times and was getting issues with rubbing and hot spots so I stopped wearing them. Found them in the closet two weeks ago, tried them again and they have been perfect!

It's an interesting story that of the June 1939 race in Solihull.
There were two riders who beat the hour for the first time on British roads, Ralph and another guy named George Nightingale. The latter is probably the most unlucky rider ever, as not only he was slower than Dougherty by a few seconds, but he was also seeded with a later number, so by the time he finished his race, the hour had already been beaten.
