Looks like WvA had a puncture on the descent. Eventually the tubeless slime sealed it but a roadside fan lent him a pump to get it back up to pressure.

WvA gave him his green podium jersey as a thank you. Not bad!

    Edit - descent post finish

The full results of today will not be known until after tomorrow.
Some will be overcooked, some will have reserves. We do not know who has what.

    Absolutely brilliant stage though!

Fantastic stuff. I know the warm and cuddly idea that cycling is closer to its fans than any other sport is partly self-mythologising, but moments like this kind of bear it out.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's a UCI fine for taking assistance from a fan !

Did the fan operate the pump? 😉

That was best mountain stage I’ve watched, after so many that have failed to live up to the expectations.

On the subject of Covid - JV seem to be more cautious. They are using ffp3 masks, and right up to the race start. most others using team branded medical masks. Latter offer much less protection to the wearer.

It was on the way down after the finish.

Not sure why the ineos guys sat on Pogacar for so long after others had risen off. Must've cost Thomas a bucket load of time.

I'm watching it now and Thomas sat on Pog's wheel for about a minute max. It made little to no difference IMHO, Thomas was at his limit

Don't think there was much choice in the matter.

Given where they are in the pecking order right now I think Gee rode really well today. Yates gets a 9/10.

Watching the ITV highlights back, such a good package - I like the Breakaway but you can't beat having people on the ground doing interviews.

I also don't see a GCN highlights package that actually includes the Breakaway.

Watching it back it's mental how many times Vingegaard attacked with 50-60k to go!

    G's response to that:

RIP to TommyP's top 10 ride a la Zubeldia today.

Although the rare shots of him just riding along with a smile soaking it all in like a tourist who'd been allowed to join in for a day suggest he's going to be back with a vengeance soon.

    I don't think he's a GC kinda guy tbh...

More of a WvA/JA/MvdP I think (and hope...)

True, but they have the common decency to look like they're trying...

Just watched it back - Thomas waits until Vingegaard has 30 seconds - maybe could have stayed with Bardet if he'd gone with them as he pretty much holds Bardet after that.

Yates does seem to stay on Pogacar's wheel far longer than he had to though given the time he pulls out in the final 1.5km - he only leaves Pogacar when Gaudu pushes on. - that does look unnecessarily conservative.

Has anyone from Jumbo-Visma explained why they burnt out Van Aert to pick up a cooked Roglic plus UAE's top mountain domestique and a bunch of other GC hopefuls?
    I'm still mystified.

    It's Jumbo.
They don't need a reason, as they have a long and proud history of pulling off dumb things.

Obviously, they brought back Majka back so he would burn himself out a bit more in a vain effort to help. He will then be no use on the Alpe. Roglic's 50 metre effort was just cover for this.

David Millar suggesting that the collapse was just a result of too much work on the Galibier by Pog.

The played their tactics exceptionally well yesterday. Was a big hairy plan and they did it really well.

This was the only wrinkle and you can see the logic - they presumably wanted to do the same as they did on the Telegraph again.

    I think that's most likely -
Robbie McEwan mentioned a few times he was doing too much so even at the time it raised eyebrows .

With hindsight you have to wonder if he even had to mark Roglic rather than waiting for 2-3 domestiques to get back and set a pace - you can forgive him that though with WvA up the road as who knows what gap Roglic would have pulled out.

Did he come up with a way he could have prepared himself better?
