I think with Stuyven he'd already committed a fair amount of energy and by the time it became nailed on they wouldn't catch the break he may as well keep working enough to get 6th.

Bettiol is less easy to explain.

Someone pointed out that Bettiol didn't reduce the gap to the break by a single second. I haven't checked myself. Sometimes people riding on the front are just getting in the way.
That was the first secteur he led, quite early on. He was absolutely hammering it later.

Watched the ITV highlights - seems they had to miss half the fun judging by the thread.

Have EF given Bettiol a proper kicking outside the team bus yet?

I'm guessing him and Stuyven will be announcing a move to UAE after the Tour.
Stuyven? Nowt wrong with his ride today. Only after the stage, Trek don't have a GC rider. Pogacar would have gifted it

And when it became clear that they weren't going to get to the breakaway he stopped working, the gap grew and the peloton almost got back to them.
He was leading the pair for most of the final Kms when it was clear they weren't going to compete for the win.

That was Bettiol's first go on the front.

The second time is really difficult to explain. Can't have helped Powless' GC position.

Points for Israel Premier Tech in their relegation fight too - Clarke's a scoring rider for them.

Re the haybale crash, apparently the moto in front just clipped it and moved it into the road

Jumbo and ineos have to take a pop at UAE here ..too good a opportunity

I can't see Ineos with Ganna, Van Baarle, Rowe and Thomas quietly following wheels
And TP. I'm assuming his name wasn't mentioned in case it summoned the troll. Put in a decent TT, so he's clearly got some form.
his name hasn't been mentioned anywhere by anyone because he's out of his depth.

Daniel Oss withdraws - broken bone in his neck (!)

Will be out for a few weeks at least.

Any news on the spectator - the screenshots of that crash at the point of impact look even worse than the video.
He looked like a big lad, we tend to come out of these things ok...

I'm assuming UAE will be stronger on mountainous terrain because at some point you'd think a rival or rivals will get up the road and everyone will look at them to chase.

Plus they have not done any riding yet

It was the woman whose shin Oss barreled straight into that I'd be worried about.

That was fun. Unless you were riding in it, I suspect.

I did wonder about that at the time - can't remember who was on the front at the time, but there was a bit of gesturing that implied the moto was somehow involved.

Not sure who, but an FDJ just swerved it, with one or two others, think Ewan and Roglic were about 4th 5th wheel

    Catching up on the avondetappe.

Dumolin, Ten Dam, Thomas Dekker and Terpstra round a table.

Terpstra - doesn't even watch the stage as he's out doing a track day.

Terpstra's fairly humourless, until they all round on him, though only to prove he's right after all.

They like him - that's obvious - but he's certainly no charmer haha.

Terpstra is quite snotty about the bike handling shown in this stage - Ten Dam tells a story on a training run in Feb where Terpstra insists they go and see a bike builder to see how it all works and what decisions they make to impact handling.

He did and apparently his bike handling improved.

    Dumoulin explains why he's retired.

Basically still loves riding the bike but got fed up with all the pressures around it, because that's important to him.

(sub-text, he's made enough money from it that he doesn't have to).

Also admits that he is not at the level of the new guys and he ended up over-training to catch up and he just doesn't have it in him.

Just incredible balls/lack of judgment to be booked onto the programme to discuss the Tour and then not to watch the stage and then admit it!
