I had to look up who Mark Beaumont was, I'd never heard of him.

Round the world record holder! Crops up on GCN a lot - if you've got GCN+ I really enjoyed his Africa one.

Probably a good comparison with Honnold to be fair. I only know of Honnold as I have some friends who are into climbing.

    If I weighed 52 kilos...

If I wieghed 52 kilos, I'd be looking for my legs.

    And arms.

Something which is annoying me with presumably the Japanese coverage is they show the caption for the separate gold, silver and bronze medal winners but very rarely (or belatedly) the whole result e.g. the men's Madison so you can't see how close things were.

I've seen similar on a lot of coverage. E.g. In the swimming they marked lanes for the first 3 with flags, but not the rest. And yes, it's bloody irritating

    He's 5 foot 4.

So in the lowest 3-4 percentile for adult males by height which sort of supports the OP's tongue in cheek comment that FZ seemed to take exception to.

Regardless of all that, I'd suggest not challenging him on his manliness regardless of how big any of us might be.

I've enjoyed the Tokyo Olympics, it's been good. Paris in three years should be something special too.

I did some modern pentathlon horse riding research on Horse and Hounds forum. The general opinion seems to be "poor horse" and that the event should be banned.

The fences are 1.2m which is a very challenging height that few of the forumites are capable of.

Apparently, most British participants come from a pony club background and are therefore decent riders whereas many of the others try to pick up riding later and simply don't spend enough time doing it.

The riding standard in the women's event was much worse than the men's. The German rider was unlucky because the horse was too stressed and should have been withdrawn. It was cruel to continue to use the horse.

The Irish rider came in for criticism for being a competent rider, but not respecting her horse and then complaining about it.

In Paris, the riding will be first and riders will be eliminated based on performance, so it will be even more important then.

The should replace the horsey bit with cyclocross
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Just been having my own read through the house and hound forum, there seems to a lot of "poor horse" and "use the whip" statements. They seem to mutually exclusive statements.

Nah, give them a line of cars that they have to break into and hot wire without setting the alarm off.

rewatching the Madison. Leave it to the Japanese to finally sort out on board camera footage. Some of that was epic!

The BBC expert said all the horses get test ridden and only get used if they show they are capable of jumping the course.

1.2m is a reasonable height. My daughter used to jump up to 0.9m albeit technically she rode a pony (14.1 hands).

Horses certainly pick up on their rider's state of mind, if the rider is uncertain going into a jump they often refuse. Some are also prone to getting spooked by certain colour fences or patterns on fillers so even though more than capable of the fence height they'll shy away from it.

well that was brilliant! 50mins flashed by in an instant.

I always think Team Belgium struggle without a conga line in track centre to distract people...

It:s hideous and doesn't seem to be faster than the numerous other "off the peg" frames being used.

Primary function may be to get in the opposition's head.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

You can do that with some plasters on the shins. It’s a lot cheaper

Amazing final from Jason Kenny in the Keirin, goes for it with 3 laps to and wins by a mile....just unfortunate that the cameras miss him actually crossing the line, cutting back to the 2nd and 3rd place riders instead

    Agreed they’re awful.

If the gain is marginal I’d ban em on aesthetic reasons

Rather strange take on 5th place from Team Oz. Replies alleging he sold the race to Kenny

Didn’t sell it but much more concerned by the riders behind including Laverysen. Probably thinking no ones going to go for a long one and didn’t pay attention to Jason. Was looking backwards the whole straight as Jason rode away.

To be fair the others behind just needed to go over at that point to chase and they didn’t either

Yes, I agree. Kenny’s said he had planned to go long before the race, and rode his luck. He probably couldn’t believe the size of the gap before the derney swung off.

That crash seemed to really take it out of Laura, you don"t see her mess up the elimination race like that. From the interview it sounded like she was half on the plane home after the Madison. Not quite sure why she decided to go hard for the final sprint, it doesn't feel right to get involved and potentially affect the medal positions. Not sure why Wild didn't get relegated, dropping down for no reason onto the Japanese rider and forcing here to crash.

GB still top of the track cycling medal table. So much for the 'Vikings' who finished well below the Kenny family. 😉
