Jai Hindley won't be starting today due to issues with a saddle sore.

Most French climbs are long and comparatively less steep, Galibier etc.
Alpe d' Huez is the perfect length to race up but the Ventoux is harder.
Tourmalet? Just imo obviously. Nice subject to debate.

I just think that Ventoux with it's unique look and it's history (Simpson etc) give it a certain aura. Alpe d'Huez may be more famous but I don't think anyone would say it was especially hard. And I personally dislike it.
Agreed. I'm not going to say that the Alpe is easy, but iconic races and fans apart it is nothing special. Ventoux is more of a slog. Speaking to Jens today, Ventoux is his favourite race climb.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

    Ganna already on the front.
This could take 75kms to get the breakaway sorted as half the peloton are trying.

A Bardini rider tried to escape the bunch and Ganna just sidled up next to him and basically laughed at him.

Bit of a mess with the breakaway and there is a group of 11 with Bennett in it. Could go right back up the GC

Chute: Naesen and Edet. The latter looks to have done a CB.

He needs 9 minutes to get into top 10, so is anyone chasing it?

That's a serious gap, is Bennett the highest placed in GC within it?

Presuming Bernal planning to concentrate in the climbs and not worry too much about the break.

Saw him near the back of the peleton early days, is all looking ok with him?

Yeah he has been a bit invisible, towards the back a couple of times. He's back up now - could have been a mechanical etc?

Astana are on the front now pace setting. I think the break won't be getting a huge advantage today.

Looks like the action may start with circa 80km to go?

Simoni has won on the Angliru and both sides of the Zoncolan.
    A Macron free triple crown

That's quite the achievement. Garzeli casagrande and simioni look so fat in that photo compared to the current crop
Look how baggy Simoni’s jersey is
Watching that Pantani documentary and the one wet stage had someone riding in what looked like tracksuit bottoms. Pantani, when he attacked Ulrich, stopped at the top of the climb to put on a rain cape that looked like one of those ponchos you get for water rides at a theme park.

    More like 60ish.

Last few km of the climb should be swift, then who knows in the valley.

Astana being left to do all the riding. As pointed out in commentary they have to save face after commenting the stage needs to be won by a real champion.

The break had gone out to nearly 9 minutes briefly but Astana have now committed the whole team and pulled 3 seconds back. EF also lending a hand now.

So predictions for a Nibali attack on the descent.. He's got two teammates in the break so he could make things interesting

Astana putting the pressure on now and the peloton is finally breaking up but the break still has nearly 8 minutes.

I always find it disappointing when the leader of the KoM gets dropped early on a proper mountain stage.

Astana pushed it on the descent, and Bernal sits on them. Big gaps at the bottom.

Must have been a crash surely? The gap to Astana and Bernal suddenly got huge.

Castro has done a good job to be keeping Bernal company. He'd have been very exposed otherwise.

The break is down under 5 minutes now. Vlasov / Bernal 15" on most of the other favourites and Remco another 20" back. Working quite well for Ineos really as Bernal has Castro with him and they don't need to work plus they have a few riders in the groups behind who can also sit in.

Evenepoel group getting back now too, but shows another potential weakness for the wunderkid.

I don't fancy Evenepoel's chances on Monday, with all that wet descending and the charge down to Cortina.

Remco really wasn't comfortable at all on that descent. Had to use a lot of team effort to get back. They should give him a cross season next winter.
