Nostalgia Thread
Having a blockbuster movie finally come on TV which used to be a few years after release. Only having "new" films show up every now and again meant you enjoyed watching it more, learning to set the video to ensure you managed to catch them when they were shown (especially those edgy late night films that would now have a 12 certificate!) was a real art.
Getting your bike built to spec. I know you can still do this but it used to be pretty much standard for any serious cyclist even if the starting block was an off the peg 501 frame. Going through the options on the Ribble advert at the back of Cycling Weekly to build the best bike you could for your budget was a real pleasure. I never managed to get a custom build frame unfortunately.
I'm probably the only one but I also miss downtube shifters. I did have a play around with my old Ribble 653 a few years ago and managed to get a set of 10 speed Dura Ace downtube shifters that, with a bit of help from Sheldon Brown, allowed me to have a 9 speed set up on my old 7 speed wheels and I was able to get the shifting so much crisper with the indexing than I can manage on my current 10 year old Tiagra / 105 set up.

Nostalgia, it's not what it used to be.The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

Anyhow, shared TV experiences. Going into school or work the next day keen to discuss the big... you’d seen on TV.
I guess it still exists for sport and the plethora of knockout shows but sport is take your pick and as for the knockout celeb shows, meh.0 -

And I miss proper nostalgia threads, not like the ones we have now.morstar said:

I was explaining to my lads about when i had my first house. I had to do a lot of work to it, and although I was 'handy' because my dad taught me, there were some things i had no clue about, such as building an open fireplace or even the right mix for brick laying. Anything like that meant a trip to the library and borrowing some books! These days they have it VERY easy, there's a Youtube tutorial for just about anything you want to do. I can't say i miss the old way though.
The older I get, the better I was.0 -
My parents used to have a full set of Encyclopedia Britannica and I used to really enjoy researching something of interest using them. Far too easy these days with the Internet.
The FA cup final being one of the biggest TV sporting events of the year whoever was playing and despite not being a huge football follower. People would watch all the build up show. Now it passes me by some years until I see the result and the match is played at some random time of day.
Going for walks in the country before the social media age when it wasn't full of people looking for an Instagram moment.1 -
Going the football as a kid, getting the bus home and stopping at the newsagents to buy a copy of the Pink which would have a match report and all the scores from the day.
Some logistical operation that. TBF they should get them in to administer the vaccine. No messing about.0 -
Getting sent round the corner shop to buy gags for your parents and they actually sell them to you, even though your 11....0

I miss school holiday rubbish TV. Robinson Crusoe and Why Don’t You... followed by a day of having to get outside or read a book etc rather than wasting days on video games (kids these days, eh!)0

Plenty of PYO around here. It was a great scan, charge people to pick your fruit so you didn't have to pay someone to do it. The ultimate win / win. Naturally grown fruit is so much nicer than imported or glasshouse grown stuff though.rjsterry said:

Shops being closed on a Sunday meaning a) you didn't get hassled to spend the day trudging around shops and could go on the bike with little grief and b) the roads were far quieter making that bike ride more enjoyable.0

Yes, I stand corrected. I probably live in a bit more of an urban area now.Pross said:
