I would suggest that 7.6km is a prologue

Yeah a prologue is not a TT.

    Ahem...

I don't understand the complaints about it being too windy for a TT. Ride a bike suitable for the conditions.

Disk wheels in a gale can be fraught. Who was it that was blown into the air and into rock face in giro a few years back?

    Alaphilippe?

That would go well on a calendar or pc wallpaper, awesome shot.

Classification of prologues aside, Ganna definitely produced a non-prologue ITT record.

Good Lord, what happened to Lopez?

Lopez hit a bump as he had one hand on the drops, one on the top. Looked nasty.

Similar to Dygert last week other than one being on a straight and one on a bend.
  • Lopez hits a bump just as he's shifting position for the corner and loses control totally. Hope he's okay, but hit the barriers hard.

Just going to post the same thing.
    He does crash a lot.

it's not as though there was anyone else near him, Just a bad case of not looking where you are going!
  • I always forget Nibali is at Trek now.

Think that's a bit unfair on him. He hit a smallish bump at about the worst time possible - just as he was shifting his weight, and just as he was focussing on entering the corner correctly so having to look up. It put all the weight onto one side of the bars and there's not a lot of recovering from that.
  • In any event, given the lack of a finish time still Lopez is out. Ambulance was called to pick him up - hope it's not too serious. Lack of footage afterwards isn't promising though, sadly.

Oh dear, it's the Sprat of Messina.
Eons behind Thomas at the CP.

  • Thomas has put some decent time into all the GC contenders here. Yates might not be too unhappy either, despite losing some ground to Thomas.
  • That Lopez crash, ouch
  • Wow, Geraint Thomas gaining big time on all the other GC boys.

  • Worth pointing out for anyone drawing conclusions about people's form that riders like Fuglsang and NIbali seem to have had the better conditions, too.

I have to say, not much sympathy for riders using the wrong kit for the conditions or trying to ride too fast for the road and then complaining.

Geraint and Yates are probably the most happy of the GC contenders. I wonder if one of the youngsters will become a surprise challenger? I don't know anything about the two in second and third. Kruiswijk miles down too.
  • Even Simon Yates has gained a chunk of time on all his rivals bar Thomas.

  • Filippo Ganna won the Stage 8 T-A ITT in the Italian champ's kit, the WCh ITT in the Italian team kit, and the Stage 1 Giro ITT in the world champ's kit. All on Italian soil, too.

Furthermore, Geraint Thomas was fourth in all three races as well.
