My most unpopular opinion in the real world, which people genuinely seem to think is a stain on my character is that I really really don't like dogs.

    Dogs or their owners?
Mainly dogs, but if their owners don't get it (not uncommon) them too.

If it says keep your dog on a lead, keep your dog on a f*cking lead.

I don't want your dog near me, and I deliberately pick places where dogs aren't supposed to run free so I don't have to have a run in with them.

"It's alright he won't hurt you he's just being friendly" roughly translates as "we couldn't be arsed to train him".

What I don't get is the level of idignation and rage that dog owners get when, in an area where it clearly states *dogs must always be on a lead*, I call them out for not having a dog on a lead.

It annoys me at the best of times but when you're trying to teach a toddler to walk outside because they learned the entire process indoors because of lockdown, it's a f*cking pain to have to have eyes in the back of your head to watch out for the dog barreling through when they should be on a lead.

And before anyone gets into the "you just hate dogs with bad owners" no, I really don't like all dogs. They can all f*ck off.

You're both wrong, but in the right thread.

I'd have some more sympathy in other countries.

I've been bitten 3 times by dogs, so I guess so, yeah.

    Probably Tory attack dogs.

Never had dogs until 5 years ago but now a fan and have two of them. Each to their own I suppose.

That's quite an achievement. I've been bitten once and the dog was racist and not in the UK.

No offence, but you are the common factor there. Probably because you are afraid of them.

The only issue with people who don't like X (be that cats, dogs, horses) is when it impinges on other people's perfectly reasonable wish to own them. We've coexisted with these animals perfectly well for 10,000 years without the need for "keep on a lead" signs until the last 50 or so.

It doesn't necessarily apply to places with "keep dog on lead" signs, but by the same token most of those signs get put in place because of pressure from nimbys, unnecessarily.

    I don't have a dog, btw.

You may not feel that way if you'd been chased by a Rhodesian Ridgeback. They are big, heavy, and very fast. I did not need my sprinting tested on a New Year's Day morning. :s
And I like dogs having had 3.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Yes, there are some weird ones. Path at the bottom of our road must be 90% dog walking traffic and is open country and yet dogs are supposed to be on a lead.

    Haha.

Erm, grew up with a cat who was a bit scratchy but never with me. Think he bit me once but didn't draw blood.

Not fussed about cats either tbh but they leave you to it and don't hassle you when you're out and about.

The problem when a dog bites you is a) they tend to take bits of flesh with them and b) you have to go straight to the bloody doctor when they draw blood to get your jabs and a course of antibiotics.

I should point out to First that, in the instances of dogs biting me or even me being reasonably apprehensive of a dog bite, the law is very much on my side and against the dogs.

It does seem that some people seem to attract trouble generally. I wonder if people who have these types of problems with animals also get a lot of aggro from other road users? That might be quite telling.

Dog bites are usually more of a reflection on the owner.

Usually yes, but there could be other causes which i'm trying to explore here.

And we can only imagine how you might 'call them out'

Maybe after he 'called them out', the owners set their dogs on him?

Clearly you don't understand cats. I have 4 and I think I have more scar tissue from them than from when I nearly lost my foot. The difference in a cat's mind between play and prey is nuanced.

Bad incidents with animals (that aren’t above you in the food chain) often come down to your own behaviour.

The day I stared down a bull ended up with me being chased and only just escaping with an adrenaline fuelled, world record leap.

Why was I staring down a bull? Because I was shit scared about the potential for it to chase me. Self fulfilling prophecy.

People shouldn’t have to run a gauntlet of wild animals in built up areas but conversely, they should learn how to behave around animals. It’s a basic life skill.
