The women still in with a chance of winning the Ashes. First T20 series the Aussies have lost for SIX years. Still lots of work to do in the ODI (think the Aussies have won 41 out of their last 42!) but it's still going

Why did Ali come in so high up the order? Are there injuries in the batting line up?

Brook struggled at 3 didn't he. I think they wanted Ali to go out and take it on, leaving Brook to play the softer ball later on. Obviously didn't work out.

Not good for the nerves this.

Every time we seem to be getting on top a wicket falls.

This whole series has been England chucking away strong positions by dropping catches and playing stupid shots to balls that didn't need playing at.

That has to be it for airstow surely? If you’re picking him over a specialist for his batting he has to get runs.
  • I think @verylonglegs is right, he is getting picked no matter what.

I feel for him to a degree, I think the negative press has got to him and his confidence is shot. That catch he left for Brook off of Carey yesterday showed his bottle has gone.

Best thing would be to take him out of the firing line, but they probably won't.

Certainly stressful. Only England would make 21 with 3 wickets left feel like a mountain

I think Foakes would be better in every way tbh. Bairstow has kept badly and apart from that 77 has looked out of touch with the bat.

I'd go as far as to say that if we do lose the Ashes he is the main reason. Obviously others have dropped catches too but if he'd done his job properly we'd be at least 2-1 up instead of 2-1 down.

Anyway I was at a Friday wedding then had about 4hrs sleep followed by a bottomless post-wedding brunch yesterday so I was feeling extremely bad today and could not cope with that stress today. Thought I was going to have a heart attack.

Had a little cry at the end.

Think I need a break until the next test as much as the players after that.

I'm going to days 1, 3 and 4 at Old Trafford. Nervous and excited in equal measure.

I only became 100% convinced we were going to win when Wood hit a 6 with 18 runs to go.

I agree. No idea why they couldn't run 18 with all the men on the boundaries. Although I saw an Aussie moaning that Wood had hit all the short pitched balls for six in the first innings, so it was a bad idea to try again.

Cricketseems to do stuff because they always have. All that nonsense about 9 on the boundary to Carey infuriates me, why wouldn't you bowl at him in teh same way you do Smith/Marnus? why treat him like a batting God that you have no chance of getting out.

And if somebody is going to bat like it is the death overs of a T20 why wouldn't you bowl the same way?
  • So, thoughts as we reach the 3/5 stage of proceedings.

    - Two very evenly matched teams, both are capable of periods of excellence (and some dross).
    - Australia have played a few more of the key sessions better than England.
    - Most of the matches/sessions have been swayed by individual performances rather than either team being collectively very good (Khawaja, Wood, Cummins, Stokes etc.)
    - Bairstow should be dropped but won't be.
    - Wood and Woakes were both great additions and should be retained (I just have a nagging feeling Anderson will come back in for Old Trafford).
    - Aussies have the edge but this could still go either way.

It will be interesting to see how Australia respond psychologically, they have the 2-1 cushion but it is pretty clear now that either side is more than capable of winning or throwing it away!

Overall, it has been as exciting and nerve wracking as many thought pre Ashes, let's hope the final two tests offer the same!

Not relevant to the current team, but Strauss used to be criticised for this when he was captain. After he had retired, they discussed it with him in the commentary box and I found it quite interesting. He accepted that giving the batter an easier single was a bit dull because it might take longer, but that their analysis showed it resulted in a lower overall score, because the batter could only score in singles rather than boundaries.

Apparently he had been in the nets practicing exclusively short balls for days.

His 24 off 8 balls in the first innings was pretty pivotal, so yeah I don't understand why Australia went with the short ball ploy a second time - I think it makes some sense if you think the tailenders can't really handle the short ball, but clearly Wood was pretty on it.

They also can't handle 95mph rockets, so we should definitely keep Wood in the side if hes fit...

He got 40 off 16 balls or something which is apparently some kind of record.

Anderson in for Robinson is my guess. I think they should chuck Bairstow for Foakes but they probably won't. Possibly Root at 3, or just stick Ali in again... I think if the openers can get through a few more overs with the new ball Ali might be a bit more viable

Apparently Ali asked Baz to come in at 3, it was his idea - presumably to allow Brook to come in at 5, so you'd actually say it worked out well in that regard, as Brook went on to pretty much win us the match.

England could, and arguably should, be 3-0 up in the series. This isn't a great Australian team. The English bowling line up looks good now it has some genuine pace in there. If Anderson does come back in at Old Trafford it will presumably be for Robinson?
  • Yes, I would assume Anderson for Robinson.

Robinson pulled up with a back spasm in Australia's first innings and didn't bowl at all in the second, so reasonable to assume he will be out. Anderson has had a while off to recover now.

Also I personally really want to see Anderson bowling from the Anderson end!

It's odd having an end / stand named after someone who is still playing (and it was named over 5 years ago now!).

He was the only person to have bowled from an end named after him when he first did it; however, Daren Sammy has bowled at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground
