IIRC there is company in the UK researching treatment who think they may have a solution by July.
If so, there is going to be a lot more grief before relief.

Spoiler - they won't have a solution developed, tested and available by July. Not this July, anyway.

Basic gist - it won't be contained, you are probably going to get it, there won't be a vaccine this year.

    Wash your hands.

    Yeah. That’s what I meant.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Is Tirreno under threat do we know?

    I believe so.

It takes place below the Pisa-Florence-San Marino line that the Foreign office say is OK, but I imagine a lot of teams may pull out even if it goes ahead.
If that logic is applied then Isn't that pretty much the end of the cycling season for the foreseeable future?
After all Paris-Nice finishes as close to the affected area as Tirreno.

Looking like the Ireland v Italy 6 nations match could be postponed

...that wasnt the version I watched....

Eventually Laurence Fishburne saves the world with the help of a maverick genius scientist. Mark Wahlberg dies a few sad looks into the camera watching his daughter at a fake prom

I mention it because I watched/read something that said it's actually quite an acurate portrayal of how these things work (as opposed to World War Z which was...well, yep)

I'd guess Strade Bianchi could be the first one to go - a week Saturday.

    Case found in San Remo.

    Two hotels in quarantine.

Game over I suspect for the race.

The are some way below the quarantine line but the situation in Siena is getting desperate.
Apparently the supermarkets have run out of pasta and loo rolls.

They're thinking of calling off the rugby and Rome is further south than Siena

Update: The rugby in Rome has been postponed.

Thought the next match is Ireland v Italy in Dublin? Or is it Italy v England on 14th March that's off?

The school my kids attended up to GCSE has just had a school trip return from an area of Italy that has had cases but not one that is in lockdown - they've decided not to isolate the kids involved or to encourage them to self isolate. My kids are friends with some of the 6th formers from this school and a few of my football team are also in that 6th form and I'll be seeing them tonight at training. This kind of contact must be being repeated throughout the uk, Europe and the world - seems pretty pointless cancelling bike races when the genie is out of the bottle.

Dublin for my Summer holidays then. :D

    Dumb decision, imo.
Seems they never even considered the closed door option, like Italian football and those games are going ahead still. If not, why not?
The next logical step is to stop all flights to and from Ireland and Italy.

Yeah I know not criticising the school just an example if how this is likely to hit us all sooner rather than later - doesn't seem long ago the Chinese were forcibly taking people into quarantine.

  • Will a lack of a rugby match really stop rugby fans travelling to Dublin if they already have plane tickets? They may even do some congregating and socialising.

The Six Nations have postponed before (Foot and Mouth). It's unlikely to disrupt the tournament too much, it won't effect other fixtures. But you can't play a champions league game in a few months time, it knocks everything out of place.

It's on the balance of risk though. The main rugby-following area of Italy is in the North East. Put that along with shoving fans from that area into an arena in close proximity to hundreds of other people and it's not a difficult decision. The risk of transmission is much lower from the rest of Italy and with the average traveller who will have contact with many fewer people after arrival.

The closed door option wouldn't be popular with the unions or 6 Nations if there's a possibility they could play it later in the year. A football season with dozens of fixtures is a different beast.

It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

The rugby season was already log jammed after the world cup. This weekends Pro 14 matches have already been cancelled and the likelihood that more matches will follow.
These matches will be crucial for European cup qualification, so also have to be played.

In short, the backlog is going to become one massive headache.

Surely it would have been easier to stop the 7 Italian fans from traveling. :p

Think we'd probably better get used to this, we'll likely see a lot more of it it this season. The virus *will* spread, and areas with outbreaks will see travel bans/event cancellations. We might just get the spring classics (minus MSR), but I doubt this is all over soon, so the Giro will be threatened and by the time we get to July....

This virus is less contagious than flu and only slightly more deadly. Over the past couple of months flu will have killed far more people globally than this virus has. If it had originated in the west no one would think anything of it.
