Thoroughly deserved win, epic ride.0

Any news on the Macau rider? I nearly gave a push as she was gapped on Hollins Hill, 3 minutes after the flag dropped, but didn't want her dqed so early.0

Great ride, boring race.0
-
Massacre. What a result. Pretty dull viewing, from about 60k to go it was obvious she wasn't coming back.0

Yeah but from 100km out?
Well, yeah pretty much...she's a bit good eh?

Quite ironic really, it will be a great win but has been a foregone conclusion for the past hour. If the men's race gets won like this eyebrows would be raised.
It is like a men's race from the 1970s or beforeBASI Nordic Ski Instructor

Well it would be but for the fact she is several leagues ahead of every other woman and at the tender age of wot 36 or 37?
Remember ELB called her ET after an insane attack during the Giro Donna. She was a Ferrari making the rest look like Fiat 500s.........which kind of sums up where the women’s peloton is at, I’m afraid"Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
I really like ELB, she's hasn't had the success she deserves this year really. Here's me and the boy with her in Italy a while ago

What about the USA female rider who dominated the Rio Olympics ITT. She was 40 something.0

Reminded me of my club's road race back in the early 90s. One of the top long distance TTers turned up (possibly Prebble) and rode off the front from the flag. Everyone left him go to the extent the commissaire threatened to DQ everyone for not racing. It got so silly that I moved to the front before the prime hill to give myself room to slip back and at the top found I was in a two man break (I soon saw sense and dropped back!).0
-
who cares if you all got DQ'd. only 2 of you had to ride as there are only 3 podium steps.0

Seems highly unlikely, especially in those road conditions.0 -
Looks like it was one of the rare races where it was more exciting in the crowd trying to work out what was going on than watching on TV when you can actually see it! We were camped at the 200m mark with my daughter literally sitting on the marker post but it was almost impossible to hear the commentary so we only had snippets of news, none of which made much sense - I resorted to taking my own times as they passed us to keep track of the gaps. Really pleased AVV won as I'd tipped her this morning in a conversation with someone on the train over from York - an act of punditry that I suspect will never be repeated. The finishing circuit is tougher than I think people give it credit for.0

Back to the WRR - Mrs mm asks - if/how do they have comfort breaks?
(Logistics q, we don't want footage)0 -
I'm not sure it's all down to the "depth of field". Remember that the world's is often a bit like this, the national teams are seriously unbalanced. The composition of the chase group, with most of the top favourites and most powerful nations in it, but nobody having much in the way of help, was a bigger effect. Lets face it, you've got Deignan, Longo Borghini and van der Breggen and Dygart with you, how much are you going to pull?Mad_Malx wrote:Back to the WRR - Mrs mm asks - if/how do they have comfort breaks?

As I understand it, "with difficulty". There's a certain amount of yanking bibshorts about. It's one of the stated reasons for keeping women's race shorter.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
So I am prepping myself for a by-the-road endurance event of my own.
Being the proper townboy I lack things like water proofs so I will be in my leather city boots and a mack like some sh!t inspector gadget with no gadgets or hair.
Am expecting a fairly selective race with lots of punctures and crashes. Obviously keep an eye out for the Norwegians and other riders who we know who do well in rain (as it’s flag to finish rain - over 7hrs riding in the sh!t over a technical course). So think Trentin, EBH (if he has anything left), Kristoff, VdP (obvs).
I guess GvA and Gilbert have both won in nasty conditions too. They’ll be up for it. Well balanced team too, along with the Dutch who I expect to shoulder responsibility for the race.
Not expecting much from the Spanish, not the Aussies but do from the Italians
I think the technical nature with the weather will make it really tough.0 -

Blacks, by the railway station. 30% off IIRC as the building is being renovated and they're hidden behind a building site. Made the error of not checking the weather forecast last weekend and turned up in a t-shirt, hence the knowledge. That said waterproof trousers and mac isn't necessarily a winning look...
My initial suspicions about tomorrow is that about half the field will sack it off early and the rest will be largely content to suffer together until the finishing circuits which will then rip it to pieces. Would like to see a proper fight to the finish, if I'm being greedy, but agree that this is one for the classics lads.0 -
Interesting cameo from the other end of the sport today, btw - Chile's sole female rider queuing, along with her bike - still with the race number displayed, for the train back towards York. Seemed fairly chipper, but I felt for her.0

Couldn't understand why no one except deignan wanted to chase. 6 of them and the leader only had 50 secs with 100km to go. Let's sit here and think about 2nd!
I guess they didn't think she could hold on and were reluctant to tow van der Breggen across. Plus the way most of them blew up once the pace dig pick up suggests they were simply at their limit.0 -
Haha Rick... I'm a town dweller but I'll be in full waterproofs. Kinda excited. Actually feel a bit bad about bailing on camping even though it would have been super shite0

Bloody impressed she stayed away . I enjoyed it a lot."If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm0

Route shortened, skipping Buttertubs and Grinton Moor, with 9 laps instead, due to rain0
-
Quality ride by van Vlueten yesterday. I was out on the finishing circuit and expecting to see the race decided there so that was a little disappointing, but there was still a great atmosphere in Harrogate. The main climb had been turned into a mini Alp - campervans, someone with a massive speaker blasting out Europop (yes, they played Schatje Mag Ik Je Foto) and some Belgians with a gazebo, satellite dish & TV.
So, whilst we didn't get to see much racing, its not everyday you get to witness someone winning the world championships after soloing for 100km.ducknumber1 wrote:Route shortened, skipping Buttertubs and Grinton Moor, with 9 laps instead, due to rain0 -
thegibdog wrote:I had been thinking that the rain is so bad it might affect today's race. I don't suppose we were expecting the big climbs to influence the result too much, although it'll mean the bigger riders arrive in Harrogate that bit fresher. And we'll get to stand in the rain in Harrogate for another 40 minutes!
Keep the great pics coming gibdog!
Yep, expected arrival on the circuit is now 12:30-12:40:

Whatever you do, don’t go into the quagmire that’s the fan zone!0 -
Shame about losing the big climbs. While nobody expected them to be decisive, we thought that yesterday as well. They'd most likely have been at least a bit selective and slimmed down the peloton or put some lead in some legs if they were raced hard.
Luckily the finishing circuit looks hard enough to make a decent race, as well as being technical enough to make it tricky to get the peloton chasing effectively. And with 261km from actual race start (+10km neutral) it's still long enough to count.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
Bottom of Buttertubs right now:

Ta for the tip about them being earlier on the circuit - will catch an earlier train now.0
