TBH it doesn't bother me but guess at 4.30pm they have to play it safe on TV.0 -
As noted above, Carlton and Maggy are doing the Giro for Eurosport International, while Hatch & Sean are doing it for ESUK.
Declan Quigley currently has the gig of providing English commentary to RCS for the international non-Eurosport market, and with Matt Stephens bolloxing his way around Italy too, that has freed up a seat for Tony Gibb to do some lead commentary, at Tour of Calfornia and 4 Jours...0 -

Is it possible to get ES International on the Player, I'm getting fed up with Rob Hatch?
I wish they would use Declan Quigley on the bigger races, I think he's very underrated.0 -

I agree, I thinks she’s brought a breath of fresh air to the coverage of the stages and asks sensible questions to keep the discussion going. Eurosport are doing really well in my opinion, apart from Rob Hatch who needs to reign back a bit on the foreign pronunciations.
Don’t try so hard son - we get the idea !!0 -

I agree that Orla is doing a good job, as is Eurosport.
Trying to enjoy the consistently enjoyable Giro coverage and not think of the K word for now...0 -

Why, if it's foreign and that's how it's pronounced?
Tony Gibb was using Franglais commentating on Dunkerque, last week.
He managed to turn a town in Northern France into a well known US prison.

Rob Hatch lived in Italy for some time so I'd expect him to get the Italian pronunciations right!
In all seriousness, making the effort to get foreign pronunciations correct is a sign of respect for the language, and in this case a sign of someone taking their job seriously. It's refreshing to hear a native-English speaker show that respect. It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.0 -

I bet a lot of the people complaining about Hatch's pronunciation say "Paree-Neece" or "Paree-Roubaix" rather than being purists like Sean Kelly and saying "Paris" (with an S)Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0

its in the French/ Belgian races, where he draws the most dissent. some friends all watch the "classics" and he gets a few of them upset. personally, I think he is one of the better commentators. certainly better than that berk Kirby.0
-
Jeez lads take it easy !! My point was he over eggs it to the point where it sounds odd or put on.
Believe me I love Europe and it’s languages, I’d move to France in a heartbeat if Mrs Shipley and the Shiplettes were up for it but it’s not the right time at the moment.
In the meantime well done Eurosport for excellent coverage this year so far.
I do hope they include ‘the breakaway ‘ for the TdF0 -

Kirby is much better to listen to than Hatch over 3/4 hours, at least he can be funny now and again.0 -
I'm glad I'm not the only one who actively prefers the sound of CK rather than RH. Not necessarily the actual words or content though2015 Canyon Nerve AL 6.0 (son #1's)

2013 Decathlon Triban 3 (red) (mine)

I wouldn't go that far but he perhaps doesn't bring Kelly often enough so it can sound a bit monotone at times. He's so much better at realising there doesn't have to be a voice the whole time though.0 -
I would watch the commentary free stream or put the TV on mute before I would listen to Kirbys verbal diahorrhea.
I'm not sure I have ever heard him be genuinely funny but if he tries he completely ruins it by giggling to himself for 5 minutes afterwards. Complete bellend.0 -

My personal opinion (fwiw) is that I just want to watch the bike race. I do not want to watch "pundits" and the now obligatory female presenter who may or may not have any knowledge of the sport in question but PC dictates.
I certainly don't want to cut away during the race to listen to four more people getting on the punditry gravy train.
I have been watching the Giro on S4c and will stick with them for any other races they show this year.
Would also agree with some previous posters that I would prefer Declan's commentary to Rob Hatch.0 -
A woman presenter?!? Heaven forfend!!!0

Orla is doing ok. But there's plenty of other sports where its cringeworthy. Most of the women footballing pundits are no better than having a child doing the job. Sky sports having a woman doing rugby league is just embarrassing. She cant possibly have played at any serious level, because there isn't one."Unfortunately these days a lot of people don’t understand the real quality of a bike" Ernesto Colnago0 -

I'd agree with all of this. Horses for courses, (merit) not because someone ticks a particular PC box. Although, nowadays I expect this viewpoint to be labelled as backward, by those of more advanced thinking.
However, S4C have 22 year old Manon Lloyd on coms. Used to be part of the UK track team sprint squad, currently rides for Team Drops, along with the Barkers. Also used to live next door to my sister, out in darkest West Wales.
A bit of a strange, BC coincidence, I've always felt. Anyhow, before this Giro started, I doubt she could have named more than 3 riders in the race, if my family is anything to go by.
So, a bit of an odd choice, there."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -

I don't think being a non participant women disqualifies as a anchor anymore than most of the people on this forum. Besides I know nothing about being a TV presenter."If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. Clare Balding was a fantastic Horse Racing presenter, but I don't think she does well outside that field, but the Beeb use her for PC reasons. Sue Barker is great on anything, that's down to journalistic skills not sporting experience. John Inverdale is terrible at everything, If the PC practice promoting women keeps him off the screen, then Hallelujah.
As far as the breakaway is concerned, Orla is fine. The program is always better when Bradley Wiggins is on. He's a naturally good TV personality. (Remember the "Is it time to draw the raffle" announcement on the podium in Paris)0 -

I think the choice is often limited by availability of Welsh speakers in the required field. There will be a "job for life" when Scott Davies retires from the peloton.0 -

My last sentence was about the sky rugby league lady. She's on as a pundit.
I think the presenter should be a presenter first and foremost. They're not there to give opinions, just to extract them"Unfortunately these days a lot of people don’t understand the real quality of a bike" Ernesto Colnago0 -
The other, purely personal, reason for watching on S4c is that I can watch on DTV rather than through the Sky Box.
Don't know if it is my hearing but I find I can watch normal TV with a very low volume but the minute I go via Sky Box I struggle with making out what people are saying even if the volume is up at 50!!0 -
