@pangolin
It is crazy. Am going through mortgage apps myself at the moment. That first lad with the £50k deposit would need to be earning £65k to get a £300k mortgage, even then the amount of lenders that would currently consider him is 1 or 2. His repayments wouldn't quite be £2k a month, more like £1700-1800, but still ludicrous.
Even people looking at a more modest £200k home would need 40k deposit and be paying £1000+ a month.0 -
Apparently there's another one, famous for something or other. Bloody leftie too, by the look of things.

Nah must be a parody. The real Brian Moore is over 50 and retired making him a Torybriantrumpet said:Apparently there's another one, famous for something or other. Bloody leftie too, by the look of things.

They could, you know, adopt policies popular with a broad spectrum of society. Just a thought.
Given that voter ID suppressed the Conservative vote at the local elections, I'm not sure why he's so keen on it1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

He's probably read somewhere that that's what Trump's Republicans are doing, so must be a good idea. Remember, they've had enough of experts who know stuff.0 -
It's not the absolute worst take I've seen on this, but it's close.

What a load of BS. It wasn’t pushing new frontiers, the owners were simply trying to monetise something not commonplace.sungod said:

Same as guided Everest trips circa 1996.
If it goes the same way as Everest, the deaths will make no difference and in 25 years there will be hundreds of subs down there fighting for space.0 -
With Johnson’s famed attention to detail he probably thinks it was a research vessel.0

I'd put it more that they were doing something very difficult on the cheap.0

Yes. And I find it offensive that the co founder, who has now imploded, conflated innovation with hubris and reckless endangerment.Jezyboy said:I'd put it more that they were doing something very difficult on the cheap.

That's quite an admission about Tory MPs' fate.

Be interesting to see earnings on there so you get a picture of how little or large that mortgage debt is compared to earnings.
Are the high earners still leveraging to a high degree as the returns have been worth it or are they low leveraged as the earnings are massively higher.0 -
Banks will lend more money to higher earners. Not that shocking is it?rick_chasey said:

Yup. If you are buying a home then CGT isn't so important, if you are investing then you shouldn't get a government subsidy.Jezyboy said:

Setting aside the probability of this ever happening for a moment:-TheBigBean said:

- Is this in exchange for mortgage relief, or do you just want to remove the exemption regardless?
- Would this be effective from when implemented (i.e only gains after the implementation date are taxable), or would this be retroactive to whenever the property was bought?
- And if a gain is taxable, does a loss on sale of a main residence create a tax loss that can be used against future gains? (i.e. the normal rule for CGT)."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Is this because you think all investments should just be treated equally, or because you think it would help fix the housing market?TheBigBean said:

If you go down this route then surely one must allow tax relief on notional rent payments for living in an investment property (as would be the case) rather than the family home (as is the case now).TheBigBean said:

Obvious this doesn't apply if you just want to raise tax, rather than raising it fairly.
