GW still claiming he didn't do it, but apparently no other credible explanation.

but if he were to admit he had done it or even accepted responsibility as a cabinet minister (a remarkable turn of accepting responsibility we havent seen in government for decades) assuming the evidence May had was conclusive, he would then leave himself open to a prosecution under the OSA, which as defence secretary would leave him in all kinds of bother & certainly a jail term would follow, though you could argue his political career is almost certainly over, it would conclusively be if that happened.

One might expect a police enquiry but
former head of the civil service Gus O'Donnell told Today that the cabinet secretary had advised the prime minister that the leak was a breach of the ministerial code and not a breach of the Official Secrets Act, saying: "That is why it is a matter for the prime minister."
Distinction between government personnel under the 1989 Act
For employees or former employees of the security and intelligence services, any unauthorised disclosure of a document or information relating to security and intelligence is an offence. However, a Crown Servant (e.g. civil servants, government ministers, members of the armed forces or police) is only guilty of an offence if they make an unlawful disclosure in one of the six categories which is deemed "damaging".

When is a disclosure deemed damaging?
The Official Secrets Act 1989 sets different criteria for a damaging disclosure for each category of information. These so-called "damage tests" essentially require the Government to prove that a disclosure is damaging.

It is for the Attorney General to decide whether a disclosure is deemed damaging, and to bring a prosection under the 1989 Act.

As the AG is a politician of the Tory variety and a bit of a wide boy it would seem, I guess Gus is right but for the wrong reason.

Some interesting thoughts on how the Huawei leak happened without anyone thinking they have leaked anything.

    https://twitter.com/gabyhinsliff/status ... 9644719104

The implication being that the chat GW had with the DT journo contained enough nods and winks that could be collated with other comments to write the story without any one person having overtly leaked anything.

yeah tbf that was actually my expectation of how it happened, no one gives you a story like that on a plate, but you can piece the bits together as a reporter (its their job after all) if you chat with enough people involved. and Im surethe DT has/had more than one source on it. the PMs letter highlights as much about confidence in the role, engaging with the enquiry as it does the actual "leak"

Moving away from Private Pike, I'm very much enjoying the hoo-ha over Liz Truss posting pictures of her girls night out (available to you for just £130,000) with the PM and Lubov Chernukhin.

Just received, after the polls closed, from the Torybot machine. Pathetic or what? Or is it aimed at the 70+ year old 'faithful'?

    "Dear [redacted]

Polls are now closed for this year’s local elections. I can’t tell you what the results will be. But I do know that we couldn’t have fought this campaign without you.

You may have hit the phones. You may have knocked on doors in English weather. Or you may just have voted for us.

However you helped, you came together with us to fight for better services and lower council tax.

People like you keep the Conservative Party going.

So I want to say thank you. Not just on my behalf, but on behalf of councillors and candidates across the country.

If you’re staying up to watch the results come in, remember that it is thanks to your hard work and support that Conservative councillors are being elected.

    Yours sincerely,

    Brandon Lewis
    Conservative Party Chairman"

Boris claiming to have voted tonight and urging others to do likewise. Only one small problem: no elections in London today.

So Mr Cameron, how is your plan to unite the party by putting the eu issue to bed coming along?

Still convinced you got it right?

Can't stand the man but, you have to credit Farage for turning British politics on its head. Quite remarkable really given he never got elected to UK parliament.

Tomorrow is the 40th anniversary of Thatcher coming to power, not sure if Stevo has a big memorial party arranged? I only know this as it coincides with the 40th anniversary concert for a choir I sing with and I think the compere is planning something at the expense of the founder / MD.

he is either incapable of telling fact from fiction or does not care. Apparently he tweeted yesterday that he had voted despite there being no elections in London.

That's a good bit of general knowledge Pross, can we ship you in next time we have a pub quiz?

Now you mention it, I shall salute the Iron Lady as I pedal through Dulwich (where she used live) on the way home after work.

That has a whiff about it. Reads more like someone trying to kick GW when he's down to show how loyal they are.

The story about Johnson being blocked from the Scottish Conservative party conference says a lot about the splits within the party.

Given that he was sacked for leaking it's a little ironic that someone is now leaking to discredit him.

Can't be true. He is a man who is instagrammed patting his black dogs.

(Today's equivalent of the Tory of old caught sh4gging his secretary or whoever who would then pose for press photos with (usually soon-to-be-ex) wife and kids at the gates of his country pile?)

Isn't that pretty much what 'Paddy Pantsdown' did?

Btw how much did you pay for your membership of the winners' party Looney? :)

    Deflect deflect deflect...

Anyway fyi my barsteward tax is £2.09 per month. Actually rather cheap for the entertainment value of the Tory party internal comms. Plus I get to upset some swivel eyes.

No deflection, just pointing out that bad behaviour is a cross party issue.

Anyway, make sure to tell your friends to join, as funding from leftie suckers, sorry new members who want to change party direction  is the most satisfying source of funding. It'll go a lot further than my £3 to vote for Corbyn, for much less impact on the party :)

I note GW has also become the darling of the hard Brexit wing of the party as he gives them another avenue to attack their own leader.

The irony is that Thatcher came into office aided by deep national divides and civil unrest.

As her legacy pays off there is again a deep national divide and the threat of civil unrest.

Steve is nothing more than a Tory ideologue, a tediously predictably patronising apparatchik of the sanctimoniously smug.
