Firstly, I'll say that I'm a sci fi fan and have been since I was a kid but I just don't get The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy in all it's various forms. I tried to get into the book when it was first released (I'm guessing 1980ish but I couldn't be arsed to google it!) and just thought it tosh both as comedy and sci fi (a later attempt to read it just reinforced the first opinion). I thought the TV series was, well, just a bit sh1t and, earlier today, caught a rerun of yet another radio version which, in the brief time that I listened to it, seemed equally sh1t. Is it just me and I'm missing something or what?

Dunno AJC, I loved the Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy.

'The planning dept at Alpha Centaur'... 'There are 27 ways to skin a cat'... 'The meaning of life is 42'.

also really enjoyed the books and the BBC programme they did in the 80s - the computer stuff with all the details they showed when doing narrative bits was - at the time - really really good.

Sorry boys, still can't agree on Hitchhikers etc.

MF - If I've got your job right, you and I have might have spent time in the very same appalling sh1tholes back in the day and TBH, even old re-runs of Bill & Ben The Flowerpot Men would have been a welcome relief!

i think you have and yes, you are entirely correct.

some of the trash that has raised spirits - stuff even Dave TV or whatever it is called would be ashamed to show.

we went through a phase of adopting different genres of awful tv programmes to our everyday lives: i remember once spending a week pretending we were in Pimp My Ride and that our Humvee was a boulevard crusier drag racer thing. We attached a couple of torches to the bottom using tourniquets and pretended it was undercar neon lighting.

I guess today it's a bit dated in many ways but in the 80's it just seemed to sum up life, the universe and everything. If it didn't strike a chord back then I'd suggest you must have been living on another planet! Admittedly I was doing computer science back then so maybe every one else was living on another planet?

"Edwyn's Terrific Transistors - bring the live outside sounds inside"

First time i plugged it in i thought Dave Grohl had set up residence in the downstairs loo so echoey was the sound quality.

Why no one has yet pointed out that Jeremy Dein ( the barrister in Murder Mystery and my Family ) looks very similar to Sergei the Meerkat!

It's an on-going issue. Started with Bananarama, then Spice Girls then Girls Aloud etc. Easily dealt with by putting them into the 'videos to watch with the sound turned off' category.

There's nothing 'wrong' with them in the sense of illegal, immoral or corrupt (AFAIK). They are just dull and boring and never seem to go away.

The Saturdays were better in sound turned off mode.

sorry but you're wrong on all 3 counts.

and if you look at what they did when they did it from a social perspective you'll see what the fuss is all about.

Social perspective! They were put together by a manager (Simon Fuller?) and all that 'girl-power' stuff was just part of the con. It set the precedent for what was to come in boybands etc. But they made/lost a lot of money depending who you pick - Beckham = ££, Gobby = divorces, headlines, -££ etc.

    Walking races
  • I am always left perplexed by the charity appeal about that girl that walks 12 mile a day to the water hole.

Why don't they move nearer to the water hole thus shortening the walk.

Have you seen the property prices nearer the water hole?

More seriously, which would you prefer: treated tap water or disease ridden water from a muddy puddle?
